I took my 1955 Model 70 to the range this morning to sight it in. I mounted a Burris Fullfield 2 on it. Took me awhile to get it close, but finally got it doing well at 100 yards on a final 3 shot group. I know it would do better if I had more time, but there were quite a few people there and I have other things to do.

Which bullet did you settle on?

150 grain Winchester power points. There always been quick killers for me in the past in a .270.

Sounds about perfect to me. Just needs eye candy pics and it would be a perfect thread.

I put the target upside down, my final three are the bullseye, the one directly above it and one of the two just to the right. Good enough to get the job done where I'll be hunting.

That rifle will be shooting better than that, when you find a good load for it.

Pretty sure he is content with those groups. majority of shooters/hunters are like that. Go to a big public shooting range you will see it. I was working a load up for my buddies 264 win mag few yrs back, I showed him the groups he goes wow, And said I’m happy if they are all in a 8 inch paper plate.. my groups were small clusters.

I have no doubt the rifle will do better, the shooter on the other hand...😁 I was adjusting on the first three shots on the right, also, the 100 yard target is uphill more and I wasn't getting a particularly good rest.

Mr. AlleghenyMountain, do you have Imgur? Post some pics of your pre 64. I just put a new 100% all original stock on my most recent 30-06 featherweight... I love mine. Have 2 of them...

How do you guys think a Winchester 30/06 featherweight from the late 1950's would stand up against this one by Savage if run through the paces in a real world scenario?

I don't have Imgur, I might look into that. I'll take some pics this evening and if nothing else put them into the gallery. I used the Talley lows on this one and they worked out well.

Thats a nice old savage, but wont ever be a pre 64 model 70. No matter how much lipstick you put on it. Go to the thread about savage weak points and get back to us.

Get an imgur acct. Its so much easier to post good pics that way.

The Savage is a safer, stronger action, and will generally be more accurate.

Having said that, I could never own one and throw up a little in my mouth when I see them laugh

Interesting and thought provoking question, Roy.
Since I own several Winchester pre-64 fwt and several Savage bolt actions, although my Savages are much newer and generally set up as long range guns. I simply see the Winchesters as classic well built and rugged rifles. Mine have given me excellent accuracy and function.

My Savages are a different animal, strong safe and efficient, with outstanding accuracy.
I like your classic Savage and believe it is a very fine and underrated rifle.... and a real bargain... won't impress the snobs though. I have been tempted by your add, I have too many rifles as it is.

Ugly? I always thought the early vintage Savage looked looked better. At least they completed it and put a damn gripcap on the thing. The only Savages w/o a grip cap are the economy models. Pre-64 Winchester's always look economy to me.

Where can I find that thread?

BTW, any time I read one of those "weak points of x,y,z" articles whether it be trucks or guns, I generally see a little envy and an obvious bias from the author that colors his objectivity.

The question I asked was a serious one since I am not a bolt action shooter so much and only own one of the vintage Winchesters and just a few of the Savages. I will say that my early vintage 110 .243 like the 30/06 above shoots 100 grain Nosler Partitions into less than 1/2", and it's a beautiful, reliable, and lightweight rifle.

grinI get that. I am curious about the practical disadvantages of the early Savage 110 if someone can point me to the thread.

When I wander into cabelas here in Anchorage right by the bathrooms is a picture of Elmer Keith with a moose and on the antlers is a pre64 model 70. Another iconic picture is of Jack O’Connor laying on a mtn next to his sheep with his pre64 model 70 in a 270. I can only think the model 70 Elmer Keith had was his 333 OKH, or maybe a 338 win mag.

I screwed up put model 20 for Jack O’Connor anyhow when I see those pictures makes me want a pre-64 that one I asked you about I might go get it if it’s still there. As my buddy says model 70’s have soul, they add to the story of a hunt. When one mentions model 70 everyone over the age 40 instantly think of Jack O’Connor.. obviously different time in the 30’s and 40’s when these two iconic men were hunting and what was available.

I poked around imgur a little bit, but I'm pressed for time. Here's the link to some pictures. Virginia general firearms season starts Saturday, this one will be going with me.

I have a pre64 270 fwt. Looks like someone was using it as boat paddle and crossing barbwire fences. Bought it as a donor. Thought I’d shot him it first. Shot 4 or 5 different factory loads in it. All grouped 1” or better. Whoever had it took care of barrel. If only it could talk. Moved on to different project. Will accept any reasonable support offer if anyone is interested.

Notice that my Featherweight has the Fullfield II, my .270 has the Fullfield e1. Nice group, 180 grain bullets.

I didn't notice anything. Did you post pics yet? You are right about the fullfield II. It is a classic fit on my pre 64 model 70's. I pretty much run those on all my hard use hunting rifles. Dual dovetails and FFII is always what I suggest to people looking to scope their pre's. The new E1, not so much. It has a fn terrible reticle. Can't stand it. I punch a lot of paper with my rifles too, so that reticle is pretty annoying... More pics of the FFII dd set-ups:

338 Alaskan:

That combo even works well on the newer featherweights:
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Hell, it even works on my m1917's:

Pretty acceptable on my CZ550 9.3x62 as well...:

The FFII 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle is one scope I'm not afraid to hunt with...

Oh man, better luck next time. I was out all day trying to help my buddy find a cow elk. He was using his trusty 1949 model 1894 30-30 winchester. That poor thing looks worse and worse every year. I'm starting to feel sorry for the thing. I used to think it was cool, it not having any bluing left or any finish on the stock....

My daughter went with me yesterday, we had gone in about 1/3 mile when she informed me that she was having problems because my wife had given her Dulcolax the night before. Total hunting time an hour and 40 minutes.

That 50s Savage is a KOOL rifle. The nut barrel joint makes it accurate, the bolt is wonderful feat of engineering and it has safety in perfect location. Remington also once made very nice rifle it went by Model 725.
