ok fellas whats the word on cci's new vnt/speer bullet in 17hmr? i hear it boosts speed by 100 fps. how has the 17 grain speer bullet acted? i'd like a touch more penetration vs hornady's 17 vmax personally.

Doesn't CCI make Hornady's 17 HMR too? If you want more penetration, you might look at the 20 grain load. Otherwise, I would suspect a higher velocity will give more penetration over the same bullet weight in a lower fps.

i just wondered if the speer bullet was a touch tougher or just as frangible as the vmax? i want it to expand but i'd like it to penetrate a few inches before doing so. i'v had 17 grain vmax's explode on crow wings and not penetrate at all after breaking the wingbone at 100 yds. yes i like the 20 grain gamepoint alot but it doesn't expand much at all but does penetrate a good bit more. i've shot crows with it and didn't know they were hit till they just dropped outta the sky after 20 yds or so flight. i want the expansion just not be as frangible as to not get past a wingbone.

I have found the Hornady 17gr VMax stuff made in the last couple years runs about 2725 out of my rifles. That up about 125 fps from the stuff prior to that.
