Lest We Forget

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Tattered Hill

The dawn came slowly and they wondered,
How loud the guns,
Non-stop they thundered,
To spit upon the mob encumbered,
Who chanced to pass that way.

And of the men,
Whose fate would fly there.
Of the ones,
Who did not die there.
Of the crazed,
That cursed and cried there,
Came the trumpet's call.

To die! To die!
Alone in rotten mud.
To die! To die!
In a thick and frowzy flood.
That surrounded all whose feet did step,
Upon the heaped, collective mess.
To die!

No smiles amongst the pungent throng.
No time to cast goodwill around.
The ones that stuck,
Propped up in muck,
They'd die, but would not fall!

Surreal,
To feel the devil's sting,
That struck, infecting everything.
And those that still continued breathing,
And the corpses that the mud kept heaving,
Would have no rest.
And when the day used up the sun,
The darkness came,
And swallowed up the ones,
That death had left behind!

Bastard Reaper!
The men that suffered on condemned,
Knew that you had not arrived for them.
Because the devil called your name,
Instructing you to leave the sods that,
Screamed to die,
But screamed to die in vain!

And finally when the coffle throng,
Upon the stale, black mud sat down,
To count the ones who soldiered on,
Remorse!

How long does hell go on?

And why does the devil craft the things,
That God and man
Would seek to squall upon?

Alas, the souls who screamed and weeped,
Would wait 'til dawn,
In hopes that they might sleep.

Envelope me, oh numbing shroud,
The voices call for death!

SS14 joined Army Cadets a few weeks ago. He's marching in his first Remembrance Day parade today. Kinda proud of him.

Steve;
Thanks kindly for the timely reminder sir.

To all who served I send my sincere thanks.

To all who died or had loved ones perish, my unfaltering gratitude.

We will not forget as long as me and mine draw breath.

Dwayne

Steve, sorry I wanted to post last night but I would get half the post typed & it kick me out & when it reloaded my typing was gone. Only happens at night???? Any way yesterday was Remembrance Day & we have so many to thank. I had uncles, cousins, & my Dad to thank. Many others from this area too. Some came back some didn't. I've heard many stories from many people, most all are unbelievable, hard to even imagine, can't wonder if I would be the same person if I had been through the same. I'm sure lots had this (ptsd) ?. It seems to me that most the Men back then just put it away in the back of there mind & carried on & had productive lives, my opinion anyway. I know some may have drank excessively etc. etc. It just seems like the older generation had more ( real ) men. This probably includes me. We haven't had any real hardships in our lives, no depression , no really hard times such as the old generation. Loose your job ( unemployment) no food ( food banks ) & I could go on but you get the idea I'm sure. We have to be thankful every day every minute every second for so. So. MUCH that we don't even realize The small stuff from day to day that they made possible. My Dad at one time went to work in the lumber camps pretty young by our standards just so his family didn't have to feed an extra mouth. I don't think there's many that would do that these days. Ya I know there's a few, one such man a kid I took under my wing got out of college & went straight out west working on the oil rigs, he was there for two (2) months & they put him in charge of his own rig. Yes he was that good of a worker. Came back home with all of his money, bought his firs house at 21 yrs. old. He is now in charge of his own fire fighting crew & they fly all over the globe doing what they do but really mostly in Canada & forest fires. I'm sure there are many of these fine young men out there but it seems ya half to look hard to find them. Any way I & im sure most are thankful to the VETs for more than just fighting for our freedom Bill out πŸΎπŸ‘£πŸΎπŸ‘£πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

No worries. The day went well. I'm in my 60s and most of my military buddies are still here. We got dressed, pinned on our medals and went to the cenotaph. A few less, as happens every year. We hoisted one for the guys who either didn't make it home or had problems after coming home. I miss the camaraderie, but not the [bleep].
