Recently picked up a new Remington 700 heavy barrel (SPS Varmint, ADL) in 22/250. Feeds the first 2 rounds fine, but the follower nosedives on the 3rd round everytime. Short of a trip back to the factory, any idea what the problem is?

Check the follower to see if it’s hanging up on the nose and if so pull it apart and polish up / smooth up that area to see why it’s binding.

That. But also check the tension on the magazine spring - specifically in the forward position of the follower.. I've seen many Rem magazine springs with very little forward tension - and that will cause your issue at times..

And if the spring is not free to move in the mag box. Can get it pinched or bound up when putting it in the stock and cause that issue too

Had one to do that, and swapped out the spring and fixed the problem.

Bend the upper & lower legs of the spring to a "W" compared to the pigeon toed version that it is now.

Your feeding issues will be non existent.

When you bend it roll it over a pen or such. Small radius etc. When done the top and bottom leg will run parallel or slightly more so.
You can also tweak in V. Spread V open a bit then roll top and bottom back to parallel in the V.
Also check for scratches from follower in the forward part of box. Edge of stamping can drag in there.
Above all make sure the whole shebang is straight on assembly.

And for the layperson ( meaning me....) just looking at and comparing them with other springs doesn't work. I've had this issue twice, replaced the spring and presto! fix it. I personally could see no difference...but...
