ZT 0562.

I've been a fan of traditional knives for decades and have carried a traditional slip-joint or lock-back daily since I was a youngster. I have amassed a sizable collection over the years, which include several modern designs as well, such as Chris Reeve, Al Mar, Spyderco, etc. and although these modern knives are all well-executed, I always found myself going back to my traditional knives.

I resisted getting a ZT for quite some time as I'm very anti "tacit-cool;" however, after a few close calls, I decided to purchase the Elmax Rick Hinderer ZT 0562 - mainly for defensive purposes. Although a substantial knife, it disappears when clipped in my right front jeans pocket. In fact, I find it more comfortable to carry than my smaller traditional knives and I quickly grew to appreciate the design elements, including the blade shape and grind, the titanium frame shape, the clip design and the ability to deploy in an instant. The knife is extremely well made and utilizes premium materials.

I also strongly dislike recurve blades and knives without steel or titanium liners, which are not design features of the 0562. Danged if my ZT 0562 Elmax hasn't become my EDC knife, which I use several times each day for a multitude of tasks and it's never failed to perform. If fact, I have grown to like my ZT so much, I am considering another 0562 in either S35VN or CPM 20CV. I've also been eye-ballin' the 0850.

If I had any complaints it would be that the extremely hard, tough, Elmax steel takes a serious commitment in time to properly sharpen, but once sharpened, it stays sharp for a long, long time. Since I sharpen my knives by hand, on natural Arkansas stones, my initial sharpening after the factory edge needed a touch-up took many, many hours over a few of days to establish the proper bevel. At some point, I'm going to invest in a set of Venev diamond-bonded stones, which will make the sharpening process a whole lot quicker.

ZT - highly recommended and I certainly like the fact that they're USA made.

When you resharpened the first time, did you not like the factory bevel angle? Wondering why you just didn't match the factory edge for your touch up sharpening. I like ZT knives. I have a 0450 and probably will buy a 0470 in the future.

Although initially sharp, the factory bevel was inconsistent.

My usual is a traditional trapper, currently a bone handled Case. Doesnโ€™t fit the requirements.

This past weekend, picked up a Boner Urban Trapper. Ditched the pocket clip as I canโ€™t stand a knife hanging out on my pocket scratching things, including the back of my hand when I reach in pocket for my keys. Like the Boker so far, but havenโ€™t used it for much.

This thread made me think of a Kershaw Gentlemans Folderove got floating around in some pack, or drawer, or pocket in my truck. Nice little lockback that they discontinued.

Iโ€™m on deployment in Miami for a month. Only brought two pocket knives, both Spydercos. Brad Southerd flipper and a Native 5. Both are excellent knives, with no faults.

I lost my D2 rat the other day. I think it fell into the blown-in insulation in the attic of the shop when I was running some wire. I'm sure not going to go digging through the fiberglass to find it. Anything new/improved since we settled this debate last time?

Know anyone with a metal detector?

I would carry my Kersaw 1993-2 VG-10 Gentleman's a lot more if it were more easily replaceable. It mostly gets carried in a back pack as a back up so it can't accidentally slip out of a pant pocket. It is a sweet one for sure.

I should probably own one, but I'm not sure how much good it would do. There is 20" of blown in fiberglass, and a whole bunch of metal... screws, truss plates, nails, etc.

I'll probably just get another $40 knife.

I accumulate merchandise points on Amazon, so I bought a spare Rat2 D2 for "free". I generally carry that more often than my Native 5 in CPM S35VN.
That D2 steel is pretty nice, and for the price it is very nice. Like CWH2 said, 40 bucks is not something to worry about.

I found mine, it was in my knife 'box'. Evidently the last time I had it out I thought to actually put it back where it belongs. Imagine that.

I lost my Rat 2 in D2 the other day also - it slid off the truck seat and under the fixed center portion of the split bench seat. There's about a 1/2" gap under that seat portion and no way to access it and I lose crap under it frequently. Eventually it will work it's way out and end up on the floor somewhere - just have to wait...

I've been carrying Spyderco for the past several months. Mainly the Sage 2.

I have a R2D2 as well, and for the $ it's a solid bargain.
