The bulls in the video (there were 12 in total in the 320-330 class) were at 9:00 am on day one of the hunt. We were hoping to find one in the 350 class, which didn't work out mostly due to there being grizzlies and wolves in every drainage.

So I did what I typically do in these situations: pass on a chip shot early only to end up taking one that's nearly identical only further away and after 5 days more work... wink

Yes. Been there. Some of the best hunting advice I've ever heard was "Don't pass up an animal on Day 1 that you would be very happy to have in your sights on the last day".

This makes absolutely no sense to me, why would anyone choose to miss out on a week of hunting, and the chance at a true trophy class animal, because you choose to shoot a middle of the road animal an hour into the hunt?
After a week of giving it my all, and a chance for some great eating my standards will have been lowered substantially !

I have two answers for that. First, it doesn't have to make sense to you. Second, because the freezer is empty.

Oh but I have, not as much as some, but way more than others.

But shooting elk has nothing to do with that quote, I won't shoot a small buck or bear on the first day, but I certainly will on the last.
Mature animals are my goals, as are most hunters, shooting spikes and forkhorns are great for kids or young hunters, just not for people that have the time and opertunity to spend time afield, does and cows eat just fine if meat is your only reason for shooting something.
Just killing something to end my hunt has never been a goal of mine, I charish every moment that I get to spend "hunting " .

Each to his own.. If I get a chance to take my game the first day, I am thankful.. The hunt is not over, now I have time to enjoy with no pressure to get with it.. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, I like it..

Not if your tag says "antlered" on it.

You look real close to the grizzly. I've never got to experience something like that myself. Nervous?
