I am going to get a new battery for a 2011 Ford F150 Ecoboost. I shop at NAPA, and they have two or three options available. I live where it is very cold in the winter and the truck sits outside in that cold for a week at a time. Price is not a consideration. Long-lasting and cold-starting wanted. Which one is best for this situation? What is the difference between a premium and pro?

NAPA Legend Pro 850cca
NAPA Legend Premium AGM 750cca glass mat

Any other suggestions available at WalMart that are better?

I'm replacing the batteries (diesel) in my truck as well. Current batteries are 11 years old. I'm in Minnesota and my truck can sit for weeks at a time, especially in the winter. So I want a battery that will have plenty of cranking power even if the truck has sat for several weeks. The only battery I use in all my equipment is an Odyssey. In the case of my truck, I use the Odyssey Extreme. You'll pay extra for them, but in my experience they're worth it.

Consumer Reports magazine has not tested batteries since their November 2013 issue, but the only NAPA battery that they listed in six different size categories was the NAPA 8465 which was listed for large Ford vehicles. It scored 5th out of 9 recommended with a solid red circle for CCA in the 750 size. At that time Kirkland, 2 Diehard's and Everstart rated higher. I would say that if you can fit a battery with 850 CCA in the battery box instead of a 750 for the same kind of money, that I'd always go for the bigger one. Interstate was #7 on that same list, but they are sold everywhere in these parts, so that is what went in my truck this year. A good fresh battery is cheap insurance for peace of mind. A $25.00 battery maintainer is a good idea too if the truck sits idle for long periods because there is battery draining electrical stuff still running.

My other auto is a .45

Some thoughts on higher CCA from somebody whose livelihood was batteries: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/13992083/re-car-battery#Post13992083

I gave up on NAPA batteries.....they just went kaput within a year.
I now use Costco Interstate Batteries in my three rigs.......and it gets cold here.

I've had great results with NAPA batteries in my other vehicles, but if Interstate is better then I'll go that way.

Are Interstate better in general?

Keep in mind there are only a.few battery manufacturers that produce batteries for all the private labels. Johnson Controls, Exide, and East Penn are biggies. The other thing is who makes a certain private label battery changes from time to time and even geographically. If you've had good luck with NAPA, seems you should stick with them. One advantage of AGM is you don't fight corrosion.

I remember reading so adhere that higher CCAs are achieved by having more plates, albeit thinner plates in the battery. Those plates being thinner and closer, are subject to higher failure rates - breaking and shorting.

One is better served getting the CCAs the vehicle manual states.

My 14 Ford has a 750 CCA battery that is 6 years old. Here in GA about 5-7 years is typical battery life and I'm thinking about replacing it sooner rather than later. The summer heat is what kills them, but we usually don't notice until it gets cold. I've recently added a winch and I've been told that going to a more powerful battery is a good idea. Thoughts.

Yes, it says on the NAPA website that they are made by East Penn.

So, wet cell or AGM for a long-lasting pickup battery?

I always buy whatever is rated the highest CCA. Unless you enjoy having a battery fail at the most inconvenient time such as dark and cold weather.

I’d buy the best battery available and forget about it.
