Young man showed up here tonight, opened the door letting
the dog and himself in. Strike one!

Introduced himself looking me in the eye, respectfully. Ball!

Introduced himself to Mama Bear, shook her hand. Ball!

I mentioned being home by 11, he said "probably earlier". Ball!

Mentioned he has little dogs, much smaller than Dillon (our boxer) Foul!

My first daughters first date.
Not real darn happy right now.

If that young man tries to score,
I'm gonna strike him out!

Seriously, I'm not happy that he didn't knock.
He goes to a neighboring school, a long web friendship through
common friends was all they knew each other.

Not fond of that.

But he walked right the fudge in my house!
I knock on my long term friends doors.
That's how the hell it's done.

Someone might get shot if they don’t knock on my door.

Damn buddy. I don’t even like it if folks holler to come in after I knock if I don’t know them really well.
Some folks are different though, and kids only know what they’ve been shown.

BTW- I got a boat and there is DEEP water just minutes from the house......... wink

Well we were in the kitchen waiting for him to come in, of course.
But I was waiting for a knock to go open the door.
We knew he was there, watching the road to see him.
Its important to make the proper first impression, that's why I mentioned when they would be home.
He is under 18, and can't drive after 11, so
I knew they would be back by then.

He just needed to know that I set the rules.

No guns were displayed

He was nervous, it may have been a slip.
If he keeps coming around, I will educate him on manners
if it happens again.

Son, when you arrive at a man’s door, knock. It’s proper manners.

Maybe he didn’t have a man to teach him how to be a man.

And I hate to say it, but girls like to fool around as much as we do.

I always wondered what that pile of weight belts in your boat was for. wink

BTW.....I've never set foot in anyone's residence without knocking and can't imagine ever doing so but I will yell "come in" if I see a familiar truck pull up and I'm elbow deep in dishwater. If you saw where I live you'd understand.

Even family knocks. They’re always welcome for as long as they need, that goes without saying, but they knock when they come over. I never walk in someone else’s house without knocking. My best friend and next door neighbor lives alone for the most part and we spend a lot of time together when we’re not working, he has dinner with our family almost every night of the week and he knows the code since we have keyless locksets but he still gives a gentle knock before entering and I do the same at his place.

Did your daughter perhaps tell him to just come on in. With cell phones kids will sometimes text upon arrival and maybe he was told to come on in. It still doesn’t make walking in without knocking ok but it might explain the casual entrance. 😁

Yeah, that ain't a comfortable situation. We were at an event on Saturday and my daughter introduced me to a guy she's casually known for a couple of years through 4H and trap shooting. They've been talking a bit more since they both started taking dual-credit classes at the local college. I know his family but not him. Seemed like a decent young man. While we engaged in idle chatter his little brother (who I'd met) tapped him on the shoulder and whispered: "That's Hannah's Dad...he's kind of scary". I figure that's a good way to kick things off.

I would have lined him out on the spot on common courtesy.

Course if you just walked in my house without knocking you'd FOR SURE be met by a German Shepherd and a man with a gun up your nose.

Then you usually dont have to explain why not to do that again...

Doesn't anybody here lock their front door?

Rule 1 here is that the front door stays locked. If someone forgets rule 1, their is the dog to contend with. Those kids who weren't taught manners got taught here. Never had a problem.

Think about all those lame TV shows where characters just walk in without knocking. Can't blame a kid for how he was raised, but you can sure set him straight.

Sometimes you just gotta tell them how it's gonna be..... at your house. For instance, when my daughter was in high school, friends would drive to our house with the noise (it aint music) booming from the radio. I told them that I didn't like it and if they wanted to keep coming to our house, cut it off. If I heard it, they had to leave. One afternoon a group of the kids were gathering at our house and one of the boys, who had been warned, drove up with the radio blaring. I met him at the door and told him to leave. He didn't like it, but word got around might fast and I never had that problem again.
