So has the action been bedded? I'd also try a box of Fed Premium 130 SGK to see how it shoots those. Nice looking rifle!

I used IMR4064 behind 130 gr Noslers for years. Finally switched to 59 gr of H4831 and 4831sc behind Nosler 130 gr Ballistic Tips. Probably shot 100 or so deer with it. Great accuracy. Work up to it though, it’s a warm load.

The recoil lug is bedded and the barrel floated from the factory. The newer 70s are all done that way, and not with that soft hot glue stuff that New Haven used for awhile. I did have a featherweight 06 that was giving me fits pillar bedded and the crown recut. Also had Williams steel bottom metal fitted at the same time.

I've never taken a big game animal with a factory round, ever. Midway was selling 130gr SGKs for 21 bucks per 100 with free shipping a few months ago. I bought enough to last me quite a long time.

Had a family member who owned a 270, either a M700 or an M70 and it shot 130 grains like nobodies business, 150 grains on the other hand were rather disappointing. He just stuck with 130 grain bullets and never worried about it.

603country,

Just curious. Why do you regard that load as "warm'?

Depending on what reloading manual a fellow is looking at, 59 gr of H4831 can be below max or above it. That load doesn’t show any pressure signs in my Sako, but it might in someone else’s rifle. so, for safety sake I thought it best to suggest some degree of caution.

And, if anyone swaps IMR4831 for H4831, be advised that the IMR is faster. Sticky bolts may occur. Don’t ask how I know...

603country,

Thanks for the you explanation. I was wondering if you'd actually seen signs of high pressure with that load--and if do what they were. Mostly was wondering if it was "flattened" primers--which are NOT a good pressure indicator--or velocity considerably higher than seen in manuals.

But I have handloaded for at least a dozen .270's since Hodgdon Extreme H4831 appeared 20-some years ago, and have yet to see ANY such sign of high pressure with 60.0 and ANY 130-grain bullet--including "excessive" velocity. The rifles have included not just bolt-actions but a Remington 760. Have used up to the 62.0 grains (the Hornady max) in a number of bolt (and one single-shot) rifle without the slightest problem.

I get 2800 fps with 57.5 grs. of the old H-4831 and a 150 gr. speer hot cor out of my old 700 bdl. This is the most accurate load for this rifle.

I've been shooting H4831 in 270's with 150 gr bullets for 35+ years. I don't think current production H4831 has as much "energy" (for lack of a better term) as it once did. When piezo electric pressure equipment came along it indicated a lot of the old max loads in the 270 were over pressure, and those published loads were reduced accordingly.

I have a 1993 M700 ADL, SS Mtn rifle that I used to shoot 59.1 gr of H4831 and 150 gr NPt. Even back then it was a stout load. Out of curiosity, I have attempted to work up to that load using different lots of H4831. I can't get close to 59.1 gr without plenty of pressure signs. I dismantled a bunch of 270 rounds loaded a long time ago that had H4831 produced in the mid 90's and have that powder set aside.

Now that RL26 has come along and changed the game for the 270 with 150 grainers I haven't pursued it, but one of these days I might give it another try with that old batch of mid 90's H4831.

Oh great. I started this post then walked off and fixed dinner. Came back and finished my post then see Mule Deer has already said it.
