Would you pop a coyote or varmint while sitting in your deer stand or stalking deer? I have killed a few coyotes while deer and get excited about shooting them as much as deer.

I haven't had the opportunity but would absolutely shoot a coyote from deer stand.

Fox and coon get a pass though

Yep. Have killed coyotes while deer hunting.

Would shoot a fox or bobcat as well should the opportunity arise.

Figger every one of those little bastards I kill will help save fawns, turkeys, quail and anything else i should want for myself.

Coyotes are always fair game as are fox and bobcats, I always end rockchuck hunting the weekend before the archery deer hunt.

A cougar will always have a bullet thrown in it’s direction!!!!

Have seen more than a few foxes taken with a 35 REM or 7RM when I lived up north.

It doesn’t matter what I’m hunting. If I see a coyote, it becomes a coyote hunt.

Foxes and cats get passes. I only shoot those by calling them in.

I will kill a wolf during "anything season", but other than that I never fire at a coyote, fox, skunk, raccoon, and any other varmint until I have killed the game animal I am after.
I would kill a bob cat because they are bringing very good money (about $900) but so far I have not had a shot at a bob cat when I was hunting anything else.

I always take them... One time shot a coyote in a small draw, walked just over the rise to another draw and shot a nice buck... Go figure..

Depends on where the cat comes from, but some of them have gone for $1100 in the last couple years. Those are the biggest and best of the lot however...not your average cat.

Yes indeed. My cousin would always get mad at me when I would shoot a groundhog while out deer hunting. I just couldn't let them pass.

I've shot a few coyotes while deer hunting. Up until 6 or 8 years ago, I had never seen any. Now I see them several times a year. Almost had one a couple of weeks ago with the crossbow, but he busted me. My son shot one last April while turkey hunting. The damned thing went after his turkey decoy. I'll shoot them whenever I get the chance, but foxes and coons get a pass. They've screwed up my deer hunting. The does walk on eggshells.

Shot this one during Early Muzzle Loader a few years back. The 8 point came walking along the edge of the field. When he got about 50 yards, I shot him. The buck runs back along the edge of the field about 100 yards and crashes into the woods. The yote comes running out of the thick stuff where the buck crashed and ran about 25 yards past me and stopped. Muzzle loader = Empty gun. Well, he farted around way too long. Every time he turned his back, or went behind a tree, I made a move. The hardest thing was to get my aluminum ram rod out, use it, and put it back without making any noise or being seen. I was able to reload and shot his ass when he was about 50 yards away.

No. I hunt and shoot coyotes the other 50 weeks a year but I only get to rifle deer hunt for 16 days in my home state. Last Saturday I saw 3 coyotes separately on opening day of deer season at the ranch. I also saw 4 bucks between 140-160”, the neighbor kid killed a 194 inch buck last year, I ain’t potentially screwing up an opportunity at a monster buck to kill a dog. Heck I passed up the chance to fill both of my cow elk tags last weekend because I didn’t want to spook a good buck I was trying to make a move on.

You know...if I ever shot one that was a bit of a cross with a dog, it would be that one. He was big ( didnt weigh him, but I'm pretty damn sure he'd hit 50 pounds)..and those white feet kinda give it away...

The rifle is an '06 with a 24 inch Bbl so he was no dwarf...

Last Sunday I was hunting one of our stands that overlooks two fields. At around 4:00, while I was watching three does and four fawns about 200-250 yards away on the field to the left, a bobcat walked out on the field directly in front about 150 yards away. I debated for a minute or so about taking the chance of running all the deer off and ruining my chances of seeing a buck or shooting the bobcat and I decided to take the shot.

I nailed the bobcat (with a 7 mag btw) and the does and fawns 200 yards away on the other field didn’t bat an eye. They kept feeding as if nothing had happened. They didn’t even raise their heads.

45 minutes to an hour later a doe, a fawn and a 6 point came out on the field where the dead bobcat was. The doe looked at it intently for a while and then started feeding as normal. The 6 point got within 10 yards of the ‘cat and never gave any indication that he cared about the dead bobcat.

Yep, actually I think here you got a better chance to get one during deer season since other people in the woods move them, they're maybe cruising for gut piles, etc. Only ever got one, fired at 2, both during deer season.

Wonder if those coyotes eat any fawns that could have been a 180"+ buck?

I’m sure they might if given the chance. I’m also sure that, like I said above, next week or any other time year that I’m not deer hunting I shoot every one I get the chance at. Pretty sure had I shot the three coyotes I saw yesterday evening the 30 elk, 6 bucks, and 4 does I was watching would have headed out at the shot.

All depends. Once on an elk hunt I shot a coyote. I moved on and less then 5 minutes and 100 yards later I shot a nice bull. Can't explain it, but if it your time it will happen. If its not, it won't matter what you do.

Navlav8r: I very often see Coyotes when I am "Deer Hunting" (Montana & Wyoming).
98% of the time I do not shoot the Coyotes for fear of spoiling a Deer opportunity.
This fall (October 28th) I was Hunting Whitetail Deer on a huge ranch here in SW Montana. This was the third day of the Rifle season and I had already passed on one Coyote on the opening day of the Deer season near this same spot. On this third day of the season I "heard" a Coyote killing what turned out to be a fawn of the year. The squalling of that little Deer went on for minutes!
There was snow on the ground and the killing took place about 300 yards from me in a dry irrigation ditch that had thick willows on both banks of the ditch.
I use this ditch to walk down (stalk along) when trying to get within range of the often field feeding Whitetails.
I was intent on a particular Buck Whitetail at the time and did not go investigate the noise, and the kill scene for a couple of hours.
The freshly killed "fawn of the year" was only partially eaten and the sign at the scene indicated at least two Coyotes - never did see them that day - they must have winded me as I crept down the ditch towards them.
Anyway this ranch had/has what I have counted/estimated to be about 800 Whitetails on it!
I Hunted for nearly two weeks on this ranch harvesting a dandy 11 point Buck on November 7th.
During my Hunts I found a total of four freshly killed "yearling" Whitetails - I did not cover one half of that ranch.
Got off on a tangent during the ensuing Elk season (which just closed yesterday) but I am headed back to that ranch with one of my Coyote guns tomorrow.
I intend on killing at least two Coyotes there.
My point is Coyotes kill an egregious amount of fawns/yearlings and I consider it a necessary part of Deer Hunting to kill Coyotes whenever and wherever possible!
I just do not very often kill them when I am actively Hunting Deer.
Maybe I am overly cautious in this regard?

I’ve shot coyotes, sit tight, here comes a deer 25 minutes later.

I won’t take a Hail Mary shot on a coyote while deer hunting, but will always take the 50 yrd gimmee.

Coyote, yep, cougar, yep .. without a doubt. "Varmint" .. as in rodent, usually not. Unless it pissed me off, then all bets are off. I have carried a 2nd gun for varmints a few times though so not impossible.

Years ago I was deer hunting with a buddy of mine, he had the tag. We’d been glassing this draw for a good little while when I glassed up a coyote. It was getting late in the morning, so I asked him if he wanted to shoot the coyote. He said might as well, laid down and smoked the dog. I got back in my glass and was doing a scan when I see two bucks get out of their bed, to see what the commotion is. They had been bedded in an arroyo the whole time. We decide one is a shooter. Made a move and killed him. Definitely owe that buck to shooting the coyote!

I can shoot all the deer I care to without putting much effort into it. Up here, coyotes are much harder to get. Likewise, most varmints most of the time. I keep a .22 in the deer stand for the little ones and whatever I am shooting Bambi with is just fine for the bigger varmints. I will happily shoot all the varmints I can while hunting deer.

No pass for coyotes while hunting deer. We have a three month season where we hunt in SC. Last one I saw was three years ago and it got dead quick. Neither my wife or I got a deer last season, but she got a coyote on the last sit. Year before on her last sit she got both a coyote and a deer. And, I think she got one the year before also.

Coyotes ALWAYS get shot if possible. During our muzzleloader season I usually take an AR if I’m sitting in a box. Shot a yotie a few years ago at first light and 45 min later there were 6-8 does and fawns within 5-20 yards of the dead dog.... I was shocked. They didn’t seem to care at all.... I got lucky that morning and shot another yotie walking out! One of my best deer hunts ever!

My cousin gets mad at me when we turkey hunt.... I’ve shot a few yoties even when a Tom was coming in. So, yes.... I ALWAYS shoot coyotes!

Just remembered.... saw a coyote while bow hunting elk one year.... pulled out my varmint call ( usually always one of those in my pocket) called him in and shot him at 7 yards. Wiped off the arrow and kept on chasing elk. 😁

Lots of coydogs in this part of the world, not supposed to be any wolves since the 30's. Same in N. Texas I'm sure, the Red River ain't much of a barrier.

If you'd kept the skull you could find out for sure.

It's nice to come back from a deer hunting trip with a freezer full of venison and a fur check to pay for the whole trip. I usually brought a few traps along and picked up a few rats and mink, kept me out of the bars at night.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Coyotes get no pass from me. The 700ml has proven hard on the coyotes the past few deer seasons.

In my deer camp, if it was known that a coyote gave you a shot opportunity and you didn't take it, you go home.
We've had such an explosion in the coyote population in my area, that I basically gave up bird and bow hunting the last two years to hunt coyote.
The only issue is that while around our deer woods the coyote presence has been greatly reduced, they've moved to areas outside of our deer woods, because others don't hunt them.

I have let them pass when on a good buck in Ohio and was afraid to screw up the stand, or a big buck was in a field but out of range. Otherwise I shoot every coyote I see when given the chance

Only seen a handful of bobcats, not many here. They don’t get very big either

Saw what looked to me like a big bobcat in Ohio, but illegal to shoot them there otherwise may have shot it and had mounted.

Yes, every time, I'm not mad at deer, i hate coyotes, last Saturday was on the mountain behind the house, perfect setup, had a nice North wind hunting dew North, deer blowing like hell about 80 yards out, couldn't see it, a few minutes later caught sight of the largest coyote I've ever seen at 10 o'clock headed my way, cocked the hammer on my 58 cal Hawken, hit the set trigger and waited, the dirty sombitch flanked me on the left deep enough in the bush I couldn't see him, broke over the bench I was sitting on and went on down the mountain.

Would have I blown that nice setup? you damn straight!

Coyotes, bobcats, and foxes get shot on sight, if I get a chance. Coons, possums, and skunks I'll let walk, if I'm deer hunting.

Unless I see a deer approaching or nearby, I’ll whack the coyote, every time. My 257 weatherby makes short work of coyotes.

EVERY damned time! Can't believe the guys that let these little turkey egg sucking bastards walk. Coons do more damage to your ground nesting birds, turkeys, quail, pheasant, waterfowl, than coyotes or cats ever could. If it's a coon, skunk, armidillo, coyote or hog and I get a chance it's getting shot. Fox and bobcat get called in during the fur season.

'Yotes never get a pass from me.

Last year I recall having one slinking around in some tall grass in front of me and two does moving slowly through the mesquite to my left, I decided the one that came into full view first would be my target. It was one of the does.

Things were different this year for this one:

It doesn’t matter what I’m hunting. If I see a coyote, I’m coyote hunting.
