My son got his first head of big game. He turned 12 this year. Mostly wanted to draw antelope, and didn't, in Wyoming. He did have a deer tag. We went out and managed to spot a buck chasing a doe. We stalked in to a couple hundred yards and peaked up over a ditch bank. It was pretty frustrating because he had a perfect shot except the buck was up on a small rise and there were houses a ways out there. We crawled back off the ditch bank and then crawled along it for 50 yards or so then back up. That got us closer to the buck and changed the angle enough that we were safe shooting. My kids don't really practice shooting except they shoot quite a few prairie dogs from realistic hunting positions. (I think its my best practice too) I told him to pretend this was just another p-dog and shoot for something very small. He shot this buck at around 200 yards sitting with shooting sticks. Rifle is a m70 featherweight, 22-250 with a 3-9 varix II. It has a hardwood stock that I cut down to fit my kids. I still have the original stock. I load 64 grain noslers for it. My daughter and son have pretty much proved to me that it's a death ray. But I think it only works if you are a teenager. I was watching through the glasses and told him to shoot. Saw the impact on the shoulder. The buck ran 40-50 yards. Full penetration with the nosler. And we've seen the same thing on mature bucks my daughter has shot with it. He's maybe been a little less excited about hunting than his sister. I think that has changed.

Great work Ralph and son. Nice buck!
A 22-250 kills deer really well with the right bullets.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Ain’t easy havin pals.

Great buck!
Nice seeing a kid toting a 22-250, used to be pretty normal around here. They do seem to kill pretty good when you’re young. 😉

My buddies growing up used a 22-250 and it was a death ray in their hands. Good job all the way around by you guys!

I started my boy at age 10 and he killed a buck 2 or 3 years in a row. I'm SO disappointed we didn't take pix. No such thing as a Cell phone or Phone cam in 1986. IIRC, we didn't have one anyway.
