I personally don't think Musk gives a rats azz about the automotive industry beyond inspiring the development of new technology.
All Tesla patents are open for any auto maker to use.

In interviews he states his goal has been to lower the carbon footprint on earth through development of electric cars.

He's just wanted to be competitive enough to force automakers to develop electric cars, and he has done that.

I'm sure he is well aware the interest in this new truck design will be limited but he is also aware other auto manufactures will design and produce electric trucks others will find more appealing in appearance and function.

He just plants seeds in the auto industry.

His real personal interest and life goal is to walk on Mars before he dies. SpaceX is his method of making that happen.

He seems to be a kid at heart but does schit to make his dreams come true instead of just procrastinating about them..

Nothing else rolling off factory assembly lines comes close. Surprising if that matters to many truck buyers, I don't know, but I can't see it being long before EVs / hybrids wipe out the internal combustion only sports car market. That is, if those buyers actually value performance above sounding like they are going fast.

From a pure pickup market/towing and low-speed off-road operation perspective, electric motors have 100% of their Tq available 100% of the time unlike an internal combustion engine that has peak RPM ranges.

I'm not on the pre-order list.

Elon is a highly intelligent Snake oil salesman for sure when it comes to his automobiles. Rocket program is making a mockery of previous NASA accomplishments however just outstanding.

NASA has been defunded and defunct for a couple of decades.

Even before their fatal budget cuts, they were contracting out most work.

Coming from the land of rolling black-outs, seems pretty useless if you can't charge it.

This.

Why would anyone with a brain design a pickup bed with high, sloping sides you can't load over?

Indeed. Pretty clueless design that way. He could have made something interesting instead of just strangely out of touch.

Looks weird.

Practical thoughts...500 mile / 800 km cruising range......when it is above freezing and when the battery is new .....based upon single motor? What is the range when loaded driving through bumper deep snow at temperatures well below freezing? Range is real concern with electric vehicles and only gets worse over time.

Still needs mirrors; mud, snow, dust, road salt etc covers your cameras mighty fast.

Small bed, not a lot of room for tools, material, dead critters etc.

Like sockpuppet said "Looks like a truck designed by a group of folks who have no idea what a truck is actually used for."

Hope y'all have a great day.

Ad this am also said it's capable of towing up to #14K.... Yeah, right.. For how long??

My thought as well, How many miles uphill at 6% grade will she pull on a single charge with that 7 ton trailer full of stock behind, six men in the cab, and 1000 lbs of gear and guns in the bed?

And how many hours with a 6 KW generator to recharge it so you can finish the trip to the top of the mountain.

Fuggit, I'm going to buy one for the elk hunt that starts next week. They're forecasting rain and snow, and the wheels and tires on that thing tell me it's meant for serious offroad work. I bet it's tougher than 4 coats of hair spray and probably comes with an Axe Body Spray dispenser.

On the bright side, he can probably sell a couple hundred to Hollywood. They will be featured in every Sci-Fi film for the next twenty years.
