I took my "new to me" Savage 99 out West River deer hunting. I used 150 grain Hornady SP's. The bullet entered the ribs by the heart, converting the heart to mush. The bullet was under the skin on the off side 125.2 grains and .62" diameter. I guess I was a little surprised that the bullet opened up so much. The back straps are tasty, BTW.

That bullet was the most accurate bullet out of that 300 by a long shot (ha).

Hornady has a couple of bullets that you might be referring to. 3031 Interlock SP, 3033 Interlock BTSP, 30303 SST (300 Savage), 30302 SST, et al. Which one did you use?

150 grain sp with no boat tail. The boat tail does not shoot as well. The group size was at least twice with the BT.

SST was a big failure with me in my 25-06 and I'll never buy another box! I sold about ten boxes I had for about half what they cost me. The experts say that SST's are now fixed. Well not having them fixed it for me.

Hornady reworked the SSTs and they work pretty well at those velocities,

They probably did. They don't deserve my business though. Bringing out crappy bullets, sucks. They should have recalled their lousy bullets and if they were going down the same road, redesigned the bullet and sold it under a different name.

My Dad (1922-2004) hunted with his 300 Savage for several decades and had very good luck with this nicely balanced rifle.

OK, it is a pet peeve. I won't use Speer Grand Slams, Sierra Game Kings and several others because of their poor performance when they were introduced. It's a character flaw, I suppose.

Biggest deer I ever killed (a northern PA whitetail with 10 points that field dressed at 170 pounds) was a one-shot kill from a Savage 99F chambered in .300 Savage. Shot through from one side to the other and the bullet went completely through. 150 grain Federal factory loads. Can't ask for a better result than that.

300 Savage is one of my wishes for a medium weight barrel in an Encore. They look to be one of the best balanced cases. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

I still have my Dads old 99 in .300 Savage. He shot deer with it out west but retired it when he got his old Mod. 70 .264 mag. His buddy used one also and dropped 5 caribou with it on a little frozen pond back in the 60's. He used the factory iron sights.

It is a safe queen now and has been since we came to Alaska in 1965. The little case interests me.
