Well I bought a very very clean 56’ vintage 39A today and can’t wait to shoot it. I have a couple of Mounties (58’ & 74’) but no regular 39A. Now I have one. This one is factory drilled and tapped on the left side of the barrel but there will be no scope mounted on this. I’m headed out of town but will try to post a couple of pics on sun. Now to turn my attention to a win 52 or 75. Maybe this summer.

"Factory drilled and tapped on the left side of the barrel" has me scratching my head? I've never heard of that. As to the 39A, I very much prefer the rifle to the carbine length Mountie. The long barrel just hangs right for me and I shoot it much better than the shorter barreled model. My favorite squirrel rifle is a 39A with aperture sight. It's the most fun woods walking squirrel stalking rifle for me personally.

Marlin 39s sold thru Sears and/or other large retailers came scoped, the barrel was tapped by Marlin.
I don't know if they all were or just some, but it was factory done.
Lyman mounts/rings were used for 3/4" scopes.

The mounts can be found on Ebay.
AFAIK a good 3/4 scope isn't still made, nor are mounts that will fit a 1" scope

I was also told you could send the rifle into Marlin and request it to be tapped and they would do it and ship it back. I don’t know if this one had been ordered that way or the original owner sent it in to be done.

I did get to check the rifle for function this weekend only to initially be disappointed for a few moments. Gun did not want to feed well and would not eject spent shells. Broke it down and sure enough whoever cleaned the barrel last left the ejector spring retained by the screw and forgot to release it afterwards. I also took out the cartridge guide spring and gave it just a tweak and now it feeds smoothly and ejects spent shells.

Its my understanding that these examples are Guns produced for and sold by Sear and roebuck. There are 3/4 " mounts for them .

I might pick up a mount for it some time down the road just to have Incase I would like to go period correct scope on it. But more than likely it will be adorned with an aperture site when I find one.

JimHinSTL: Good for you on the acquisition and then the repair of the Model 39A:
I own just a few (5) of these wonderful lever action Marlin Model 39A's and don't shoot them near as often as I should.
They are just simply the most fun Rifles to shoot and almost always very accurate!
I hope you will be happy with this Rifle also.

I have a 39A with a serial number that starts with “T” that is supposed to be rare.

If I didn’t have better squirrel rigs I would get it restored... maybe one day.

Well when I go to the year of mfr, they don’t list a “T” so if that’s true it’s a very rare bird. Any chance that the “T” is another letter?

I aged (dated?) 5 of my Marlin 39's using it and they came out as manufactured in 1950, 1952, 1975, 1978 & 1990.

One collector told me that “T” models were an off year they only make 2,000 or so of them and they are vary rare.

IDK... it does have a relatively low serial number after the T so I can see it being true.

That list makes mine a '57. Knew it was an older one. 39a's are it.
