My middle son Matt got his 1st elk on Wed. the 27th. Opening day of the late muzzleloader season in SW Washington. He had drawn a cow tag for the late season. They spotted the herd shortly after day break about a mile away and it took them a couple of hours to get into position. One shot thru the lungs from his 50 cal. knight put the cow down. She ran about 60 yards downhill. He was with his brother who had tagged a nice 5 point on the opening day of the regular muzzleloader season back in early October. They were about 3 miles back in so a good friend brought a couple of horses in to make the pack out easy. I'm very proud of these sons. They've elk hunted for a few years and have had chances, but something always went wrong. They both work for DNR and have really learned a lot about the elk over the last few years and finally put it all together.

Super! Looks like the buzzards cleaned up that carcass. Excellent job there. Ground shrinkage becomes less and less of an issue the further one is from the rig. Eat well,

I'm not sure if they are or not. My son did tell me that these 2 horses hadn't packed an animal before but they did a fantastic job.
They spent the day cutting meat today. And I canned a bunch. We just bought a new LEM 22 meat grinder so they got to try it out.
