I had decided to sit there until 5 PM then ease up to the bean field for the last few minutes of shooting time, as I have seen deer enter that field at last shooting light on several occasions.
I quietly gathered up my gear and stood up at 5 PM, but glanced back at the trail. Crap! There is a deer looking at me! I put up the rifle and what I thought was a doe turned into a spike buck. He had seen me but wasn't sure what I was, and nervously walked to my right. I caught movement behind him then saw tall tines. The bigger buck walked towards me then stopped facing me when he finally saw me. I sized him up as a 3.5 year old, good enough for me on public land. I put it on the center of his chest and squeezed off the frontal shot. At 41 steps that 100 gr E tip at 3600 fps from my .257 Wby hammered him. He flipped over on his back and did the row boat with all four legs in the air for a few seconds and that was it. At that velocity I wouldn't take a frontal shot with a cup and core bullet but will take it every time with confidence with a mono.
