I recently acquired a m70 Ultimate Shadow in 25-06 from a member here. While I really like the gun and it being a controlled round feed m70 in stainless I just don't care for the factory stock. I like the shape and feel but it either needs a nice McMillan or I'm not opposed to a nice piece of wood for this one. I know squat about Winchester's and not sure what's out there so I'm asking here. I'm a fan of the Remington mountain rifle stock for reference. Anybody have something laying around or have some recommendations? Thanks

I have the same rifle except the short action version in 270 WSM, which I recently acquired and just hunted for the first time. I'm like you in my sort of nonsensical objection to the stock. Like you I "like the shape and the feel" but there is something about it that just strikes me wrong. I'm trying to convince myself maybe liking the shape and the feel is enough, but I have found a good potential replacement through Stocky's Stocks. I think this is what we want, I'm just having trouble convincing myself it's what we NEED, if you know what I mean.

Good luck with it. Let us know what you do.

CDNN sports usually has some nice factory over-run/blemish wood stocks for M70’s. I’d check there for wood. For a micky, dig up the Winchester/McMillan pattern post. It will give you a good idea of how the McMillan offerings relate to grip, drop at the heel, etc. For a 24” sported I’d lean towards a classic, but it has more drop at the heel than some like. Doesn’t bother me. If your not building a lightweight, the Supergrade is a good one. The Monte Carlo isn’t pretty as far as lines, but fits me well also.

Thanks for pushing me over the edge. I just ordered that stock I didn't need. Got it in black with gray web (since that's one of the only patterns that were in stock) and think it's going to look stunning with the matted stainless of the M70 metal and the matte black of my scope and mounts.
[Since it's all about looks, right?] wink
Cheers,
Rex
EDIT: Free shipping with code AC2018 and no tax. $285 total. I'll post a review to this thread when it arrives.

The featherweight stock that comes with the long magnum featherweights would be nice.

If you aren't in a hurry keep an eye on the classifieds here. Used McMillans turn up from time to time. I have 3 rifles in McMillan Edge stocks and all 3 were bought used here. I think $475 is the most I paid for any of them. You can't be picky about color or even stock style, but I'm happy with all of mine.

The B&C Medalist isn't my favorite stock, but it is a decent stock. It is the same one used on the Extreme Weather rifles. They are heavier than I like and a bit chunky. What they call an Ultralight is still 1/2 lb heavier than my McMillan's. But still overall a good stock. You would end up with what is basically an Extreme Weather rifle without the barrel flutes.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.
