Has anyone used one of these? I am curious as to whether it is better than a 455. Think I like the push to fire safety, but always like the opinions of those who have actual experience with the model.

If five rounds counts, yeah.

As told elsewhere here, a range pal has the AT-One Varmint model. Stock is bettr in person than on the internet. Good trigger on his. My five shots with a good lot of SV went into about 1/2", less, minus one out a bit. He really likes it, and has a lot of pricier ones to play with.

This model is too heavy for me for field carry. Nice rifle, but at $600 you're getting into territory with more choices than the $400 range of standard models.

I think different would be a better way to say it, the trigger is a bit more refined, bolt throw is less than a 455, and the safety is different, barrels are the same as 455 barrels, they have a matte finish as opposed to blue on the 455.

I reviewed the 457 in one of this summer's issues of SPORTS AFIELD. You might be able to find it somewhere online, but maybe not. I'll cut to the chase and say I bought the 457 and sold my 455. Both were "Varmint" models.

Thanks all, for your responses. Mule Deer, I will hunt for that issue of SA, thanks for the heads up.. I get Handloader and Rifle by subscription, buy Guns at the grocery store....may have to add Sports Afield to my list! But your purchasing the 457 tells me what I probably need to know.

Must also comment that I quit writing for GUNS this year. Do both a column (on hunting rifles) and a feature for SPORTS AFIELD.

Sold 2) 455's - 1) .22lr Varmint the other 17HMR American. Now own a 457 American in 17HMR. Awesome rifle, fixed all my complaints about the 455's.

Thanks for the report, Centershot. I'm getting interested in the 457, and it sounds like a lot of people like them!

I sent my 455 american 22lr down the road yesterday, had feeding issues when swapping barrels to the 17hmr, and it wasn't as accurate as other 22s I own.

Only cz i have left now is a 452fs

I am curious- do you remember what year that 455 was made?

not exactly, but it was one of the early ones, I had it about 8 years or so. I remember they had a 453 sitting next to it, but the barrel swap option got my attention.

I asked because it seemed like a LOT of the early 455s had accuracy and other issues than seem to be linked to the switch barrel.system.

I think it took CZ a while to get the tolerances down on that setup. The basic barrel attatchment design must be OK since they incorporated it into the new 457.rifles.

I never have any issues at all with either of my 455's, both very accurate. Still sold them both to get a 457 and would do it again.

Were your 455s made before 2014?

guess i'm a rebel or just different or something as i prefer the looks of the 452 and 455 to the savagesque look of the 457. i understand all of the purposed "upgrades" like forward to fire and decreased bolt lift of the 457. but, guys its never bothered me in the least any of the "down falls" of the 452/455 design. i have (2) 455s and many 452s and don't intend to sell any of em for a 457. i mean the 457 uses the exact same barrels as the 455 so they can't be more accurate barrel wise. i'm about to send both.22lr and 17hmr,stainless barrels off to get chopped and threaded for my 455 stainless american.

The 17HMR American was purchased pretty close to 2014, the 22lr Varmint was after 2014. Never took the barrel off either of them. Just shot them as they came from the factory. Did fix the triggers on both but other than that they were stock.

Savagesque - bite your tongue. Only Savage that I have owned in the last 10 years was made by Anschutz.

The 452's and 455's were all good guns, I just hated the safeties and adjusting the trigger was a major effort. 457 took care of both of those complaints and is every bit as accurate as the 455's I owned so I would have a difficult time recommending one of the earlier models.

My first 455, a .22 mag I bought on a whim on a vistit to the old Green Top, was fairly accurate with that barrel and the LR barrel, but feeding was iffy with the LR. Probably could have tweaked that out, but the whole barrel-swapping thing wasn't as alluring as I expected. My current one in LR and SS, is a solid rifle with a very nice trigger as-is, so should stay on unless I have one of my spasms and trade it off. A SS 457 might tempt me, but might not too.

Shot my BIL's new 457 .22lr Thanksgiving day. Great shooting rifle, really liked the Midas+. He was shooting Mini-Mags and it did ok, but it shot better groups with the standard velocity. The worse grouping at 50 yds was the Mini-Mags, next best was the CCI standard velocity, and the best was the Laupa Midas+. With the Midas+ it would just wallow out one hole.

Only thing I didn't like was the weight. That bull barrel makes it heavy for a .22.

Even with a 20oz scope my SS 455 is pretty light and handy. I hope I don't go chasing perfection and trade it off foolishly. Despite the flaws, it's a good rifle.

How does your 455 SS shoot? LR?

Good, I hope. I have it on good authority that Santa is bringing me a SS 455 in 22LR. The SWFA 10x42 I got during Black Friday might look overpowering on it but I'll be damned if I'm not going to give it a try!
