This is the official Follically Challenged/Shamanic 2019 Hog Hunt Thread. Mister FC and I are taking off tonight for the swamps of southeast Georgia for a few days of wanton hog slaughter. Where possible, I will provide updates.
The first stop tonight will be in Richmond, KY. We decided that getting below Lexington would put us in a better situation for getting out for a hunt before sundown on Tuesday. Our destination is . . . well, I'm not quite sure of our destination. I know we go to Rhine, Georgia ( a good German name) and then some, and then there's this swamp marked Hier gibt es Schweine (There be Swine here). Of course, it's an old map compiled by Gotlieb Gerstacker, the German who discovered Georgia. I found it in my Dad's things. From what I understand the Germans first arrived looking for gold and found hogs instead and exported sausage back to Germany for a couple of decades before being run out by the Spanish.
The accommodations we've gotten for the night are in a Best Western with an indoor pool--just staggering distance from a Sonny's BBQ. I can see myself now, licking sauce off my fingers in the chaise lounge. The nice thing about these Ingwe Signature Leopard Skin swim thongs is they hide BBQ stains well. The downside is. . . well, wearing matching leopard skin swim attire could give the wrong idea to people. It's okay; neither of us are shooting a 270 WIN this trip.
Foxtrot Charlie is currently out at Jungle Jim's doing final provisioning. I'm cramming the last bit of gear into my portable hole. It's a handy bit of adventuring apparatus, driven by a naked singularity stuffed in the bottom of a WWII Hick's Pack. The singularity (a mini-black hole) allows one to pack whatever he wants into a very small volume. When you get to where you're going, you just spritz a little WD40 into the singularity, and it begins to cough stuff back up in the order it was stuffed in. The only problem is that it retains the original mass. Mine has grown rather heavy with the passing years of camping, hunting, and adventuring. When I got it, it was just a light daypack that I barely noticed. With just the accumulation of dust, debris, and empty food wrappers, it's grown in weight. I'm sure those of you who've acquired naked singularities for your backpacking experiences will attest to this problem. I have had mine for 40 years. It gets noticeably heavier every year.
What I'm shooting:
Ruger Model 44 Carbine w. 44 Mag 240 grain Hornady XTP Ruger Super Blackhawk (same ammo as above) Savage 99 in 308 Win w. 165 grain Hornady Interlock Ruger Hawkeye in 30-06 w. 165 grain Hornady Interlock
I'll keep the Hawkeye in reserve as a backup, preferring to give the others a good airing.
What We're Drinking: The Macallan (12 Year) switching off to Scoresby after our tastebuds deaden.
We'll arrive at the swamp after midday on Tuesday and get going immediately for a late-day hunt. FC has assured me that the outfitter has been able to arrange for bearers, etc. We nixed the idea of hunting from elephant-borne howdah at the last minute. The cost was going to be extravagant. We'll be schlepping it on foot instead. The elephants would have been necessary if the swamp was flooding, but the water is down and most of it will be dry land for the length of our stay.

Foxtrot Charlie's last report indicated he's bringing a Rem 722 in 300 Savage and a K98 in 7X57. I think both are perfect sausage guns.
I had thought about bringing my Mauser from Hell (K98 in 8X57). However, I figured that if I put it in the case with the 30-06, they'd start fighting.

I had to swap the K98 (darn ammo issues) for a M700 Mountain Rifle, similarly chambered. The .300 SAV will be tossing 130 TTSXs, while the 7x57 shall grandly lob 154 SP's. Perhaps I can score another triple.
The 722 also has one of Doug's 1-6 Burris scopes with the illuminated #4 reticle. My thinking was that it would be a cracking-good apparatus for my ploy to perforate, then purloin, porkers in poor light. Here's hoping the opportunity for empirical evidence presents itself.
All the kitchen work is finished, and the packing done. Even the last few items that had been hiding quite well, have been located. From swimsuit to creole seasoning, I think I've got it all.

Hoopah!
It's looking like I'll be off shift right at 1500. Be at the rendezvous point as close to 1515 ET as possible. Park next to KYHillChick's red Cruze in the driveway.

Well,...it sounds like a fun trip. But,.....you head out from the Cincinnati metro area and on the first leg of your journey you only make it to Richmond KY?
That's a quarter tank of gas and one small coffee.

That's a quarter tank of gas and one small coffee. But Richmond has some hot college women looking for some guys in leopard thongs dusted with creole seasoning! Good luck boys!

I'm here!!! It's been iffy getting an internet connection down here.
To answer a previous question: our destination was SE Georgia, only 9+hours away. By getting through Lexington, we knocked about 2 hours off that. We arrived the next day around 1300 and were able to make it out for a 1500 hunt.
The bad news: I've yet to see a pig. Foxtrot Charlie saw two today, but not where he could shoot them. We've heard them grunt and squeal-- especially this evening, but nothing showed.
Tomorrow is our last day.
EdM: So you know about FC's snoring? Yikes, why didn't you warn me? It sounds like the fabric of space/time is ripping. The walls shake. The cattle run into the next pasture!

Funny, I’ve never noticed myself snoring. It seems that Shaman repeatedly sets his timer for 60 minutes, so he can wake up & tell me to roll over & knock it off.
The porkers have avoided us thus far. The locals are hypothesizing that the bastards are holding up in the hardwoods gorging on “Eh-kerns”. Alas, we don’t have access to that area. As such, we’re reduced to patiently waiting, like Linus Van Pelt for the Great Pumpkin.
I did walk the pines for a couple miles yesterday, finding lots of rooting, but none of it fresh.
I suppose that’s why they call it hunting.
In the meantime, Shaman is way ahead of the curve in learning South Georgia Speak, the provisions are holding out well, and we’ve not had to waste any time skinning ‘n gutting hogs.
The plan is that we’ll start posting pics of scotch, rifles, & German hats if this morning’s hunt doesn’t yield any porkers.
