Men's Maine Guide Wool Pants reviews?

Need to replace the cold weather hunting pants I have been using and wonder if anyone has tried these?

What sparked my interest is they have sizes that would fit me with 46 waist and 33 inseam, being 6'4" and 280 it is rare I find cold weather hunting pants that fits..

I have a matching set of the camo pants and shirt-jac I bought about 10 years ago or more. They are nice heavy-weight wool and I opted for the Gore-Tex Windstopper liner in both. I see that's not an option now. I've taken them with me on most of my annual trips up north. In the last four years our falls have stayed warmer longer and I've left the pants in Aleutian Hell and taken my fleece lined Duluth Trading pants instead. The shirt-jac always goes with me and with a base layer and a fleece shirt it keeps me warm well down into the 20s F. The first year I had them, I went on an outing where it snowed and the temperatures dropped down into the 10s F during the day with a little wind and right at 0* F at night. The pants (with long johns) kept my legs warm enough for day long outings on a 4-wheeler, sitting on hillsides glassing and tent camping. I wore a different jacket on that particular outing. My boots were a little marginal for the conditions. I had a pair of 400gm Thinsulate Cabela's guide boots, but wool military mountain socks made up the difference there.

I think you'll like the pants if you get them. I've been happy with mine and IMHO, I think the LL Bean wool clothing is about the best bargain going for wool.

You will love them. We use them extensively for hunting here in NoDak. I wouldn't mind if I was buried in mine someday.

Just spray them with some DWR when you get them, and you won't have to worry about anything at all except a monsoon rain getting through.

If you buy stuff from LL Bean you are supporting a Liberal Socialist Democrat agenda driven company from greater Boston aka southern Maine.

It is akin as to going to movies and supporting Hollywierds Liberal Socialist Democrat agenda.

Best wool hunting pants are the army surplus Korean War wool. Can be had at Army Surplus Warehouse In Idaho Falls for less than 20 bucks. Great for hiking in the snow with or without thermals. Might be light for stand hunting but for late season elk hunting nothing better. Even come with suspender buttons

LL Bean isn't what it once was. Seems the offerings are geared to the man bun types rather than the lumberjack/guide type. I can't comment on the pants, but the last 2 items I ordered from them fell apart much quicker than they should have.

The cold weather set I had been using for 15 years fit perfect and worked great . It was a was a "Weatherby" branded heavy parka and with Gore-Tex Windstopper liner in them. They worked for me down to zero with long johns but I made the mistake of washing them and not turning the machine to gentle. It shredded the inter wind stopper lining that now sits in clumps at the bottom of the pants

Another option that is a little more affordable is the Codet/Big Bill brand. Made in Canada.

I have used Codets for years and they are excellent. I live in Maine and don't use Bean products. The people working in their hunt and fish departments are less than worthless. They sell, or try, to sell guns at way high prices and have had many of the same guns for years. In addition, the staff is not particularly knowledgeable about firearms. Certainly not gun cranks like one would hope for in a gun department. But I digress. Besides the Codet I use Johnson Woolen Mills wool coats from Vermont. They are hell for stout and last forever.

Buy them used from eBay, either Bean or Woolrich. They never really wear out. Or you can go all-in and pay for Filson.

My experience with Bean's products, especially wool hunting pants, is that they have gone downhill in the past few years. I have had issues with 2 pair of their guide pants. Both went back and were replaced. I still have a pair of the LL Bean guide pants (camo) but I just finished stitching the crotch and waist/belt-line up up where they were separating at the seam. I'm not sure I'd go back for more. Can't say I've seen the same decline in quality of the Jac-Shirt, but the pants, I'll pass on. Oh, and their lifetime warranty...it doesn't work like that anymore.

As someone above mentioned, I'd go the Codet route for pants. High quality, lower price, excellent value.

If you have the coin, Johnson Woolen Mills still makes the best stuff (IMO).

I think that now you are required to manscape in order to wear LL Bean gear.

LL Bean and Eddie Bauer both went to hell, literally. They're both run by commie-thought people and no longer get a thin dime from me. They both rile against "blood sports".

They shouldn't from any of you, either.

That's pretty funny considering LLBean does a better job than most in catering to hunters with better than average quality gear (unlike, for instance, Bass Pro).
