He’s 100% correct in doing so.

Been a long time reader here on the campfire but haven’t been much of contributor as of yet. Certainly gleaned a lot here from others over the years. Particularly from Mr. Sinclair who’s experience and wisdom helped me decided to try my first GAP built rifle chambered in a 6.5 Saum. I’d never handled a Defiance prior to then. Boy was I impressed. Prior to that I’ve had and still do a handful of trued Remington 700’s. Tried a Stiller predator. That rifle was way accurate. Gave a Pierce XL single shot a go chambered in a 338 Edge. It was smooth and also very accurate. Those 2 rifles have since went on to serve the needs of friends. My GAP rifle is here to stay. In fact just a few weeks ago pick up my 2nd, a lightly used GAP nontypical. When the price is right, no hesitation is necessary.

The other actions I’m really liking are those from Lone Peak Arms. I have both their steel and titanium options. They are also very impressive.

It's rather impressive just how many custom bolt actions are on the market these days isn't it?

Must be at least 25 manufacturers and no end in sight.

It's crazy how many options there are. Especially with the larger companies offering multiple lines.

I will say, either I have been paying less attention, or they've slowed down a bit. The last one I personally remember surfacing is Joel's after he left Curtis.

I think lots of them make great actions, but the support certainly varies. Bighorn was the first I noticed (of action makers, AI was obviously doing it prior) that highlighted their interchangeability. I think as a result, they have the most options for shops chambering barrels sans action in hand. Impact, Curtis, possibly Lone Peak, and others are making great systems in a similar fashion, but nothing that has tempted me to switch.

It's a good time to be a precision rifle enthusiast.

Carl, you aren't kidding.

The folks at Bighorn have been nothing short of awesome to deal with as well.

All my Defiance and Phoenix actions have extended tenons

Yep - Definance Elite actions have extra long tenons, BAT did the same thing a few years back.

I REALLY wanted a Definiance elite for my PRS build, but took a 60 degree bolt lift path.

Looks to me like the extended tenon on a Defiance is optional?

Yes, but I've had good luck with it. If I were to get the standard length, would I be as happy?

If you were to hang a big ass barrel on it, I would get the extended, otherwise get the standard.

Did one on a 704 action in 280ai with a McMillan and proof barrel, shoots amazing. Having another built on a pre 64 model 70 in 264 win mag right now with a #3 brux and throwing it in a mcwoody, a modernized Westerner if you will. Should be shipping on Friday after almost 6 months at LRI....
