Anyone have experience with this one? Appropriate for a new, young shooter? Thoughts appreciated.

Will you be handloading for it?

Full power factory stuff will be pretty "blasty" out of that short barrel. I've seen more than one new young shooter put off by blast more than kick.

Is this a older model, Mark ii or hawkeye?

MK II. Figured the short barrel might be off putting and I think I would look to create reduced training loads. Laminate stocks which could be shaped down some as well.

I have a Mk ll SS, 260 and there is no stout recoil for me. However regarding the blast - mine is not the short barrel variety.

I had one in 308 and 243 both had very low recoil due to the weight, but very loud on the barrel end.

Heavy? Would that be the Frontier version?

The SS/laminate with the 16'' barrel compact model. One was a Mark ll high luster stainless and the other was a M77 hawkeye dull stainless finish. Mine was not the frontier models.

I had one for awhile. The laminated stock was heavy and contribute to a butt-heavy balance, even more so than the average 18.5" barreled Remington Sevens. Very loud too, almost as much muzzle blast as a 24" Vanguard in 257 ROY. I keep a lot more rifles than I sell, but I sold that rifle and never felt even a twinge of seller's remorse.

I'm working on a similar but lighter rifle based on a Howa mini with a Youth stock chambered in 6.5 Grendel. It would be great for a Kid, but I plan on using it myself.

So far I've shortened the barrel to 16 1/4", modified the mag to a flush fit and shortened and re-contoured the forend. The LOP is 12 3/4" on the youth stock and the overall lenght is 34" It weighs 5lb 7oz as seen.

....................Not too bad for the adults either. I have a MK2 Ruger Frontier.......At 35.5" OAL I would assume that these compacts would be great for younger shooters too.

If you reload, then I suggest the more milder loadings to reduce the noise and blast from the shorty tube.

HINT: USE ELECTRIC EAR PRO ALL THE TIME WHILE HUNTING!

Those little .260s are death on a cracker.

If you don't already have the .260, get a 6.5CM instead. With a longer barrel.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
