if you hit the brain, it doesn't matter what bullet is used. For many years, the biggest bear on record was taken by a single .22 LONG, from a rifle, to the temple at 5 yds or less. A little indian woman did this and then used her single shot rifle to put some insurance bullets into the the same spot. This guy takes them with a blowgun

Sometimes folks get lucky, or are the exception.

No issue to step up to a much more dependable cartridge or weapon, than a blowgun or 9mm.

Mac, I do believe his only experience is jacking his mouth. But he is extremely experienced at that!!!

hundreds of head of small game, 2 deer, both with 9mm from a baited tree stand. Anyone who can take deer with a bow can do so with a 9mm. It's just a question of setting up the stand properly, having a blind, where you can see them run 100m or more. With a good load and a good hit, from 20m or less, they never make it that far.

just because you're inept doesn't mean everyone is. It' not luck when when a master pistolero brains them. You just have to bait them in. Guys take them with blowguns and spears.

Yeah... That doesn't sound like someone who's actually spent time learning to shoot well. Skill with a bow has nothing to do with skill with a pistol. Not that someone can't kill deer easily with a bow or a 9mm, but there are a LOT of guys who shoot one or the other and can't hit a barn with a 9mm.

Between this thread and the one about the CCW guy who got shot (still waiting for a reply on that one BTW), I'm thinking satir is here to impress us, being a master pistolero and a quick draw specialist. We may have some competition here for dla.

So you haven’t tested this theory on bear yet? I’ve killed more than two deer with handguns and I don’t think the 9mm is a good idea. Can it work? Sure. Consistently? Not so sure.

Exactly right. Getting mauled to death by a brown bear because your head shot with the 22 didn't go to plan is somewhat embarrassing.

For me absolute minimum would be 357 magnum or 10mm with hard cast rounds by buffalo bore or underwood. I know of two cases locally that 9mm has been used successfully for bear defense but don't think it is a an appropriate caliber for the task.

In my experience large game have s lot of blood and larger caliber inflict Parker wound channels which allows them t bleed out quicker in most cases.

I'm fond of going overkill. It's easy to apologise if you've offended in the process.

I do believe Phil Shoemaker killed a Brownie with a 9mm because that is what he had when the situation called for it bu I do not think he would recommend it as soon me thing to do on purpose

Master bear guide Phil Shoemaker killed a brown bear with 9mm. He also did it with a 3” barreled S&W model 60 j-frame 357 mag.

Yes he did. It was all he had and he was very fortunate the bear wasn’t charging him. I’m not taking anything away from this, as he saved his client’s bacon. That doesn’t make a compact 9mm a bear gun.

I'm not aware of but one bear that Phil used on handgun on to stop and that was with a 9mm. I'd like to see the link to the one with a 357 mag, if it exists

Even if he hadn't said it himself (and I seem to recall that he did so here on this forum) reading his account is enough to convince me that he wouldn't recommend the 9mm for large bear defense.

Phil has stated that had he known he was about to be charged by a brownie, he’d have had ol’ ugly.

I think I recall reading that Phil's daughter carries a .357 with 180 gr. hardcast for bear protection.

Interesting. For about twenty years my do-everything woods gun was a 3” Mod 60, first in .38 Special then upgraded to .357 when it came out. Then maybe ten years back I was in a 3 minute standoff with a 300+lb feral boar hog, it eventually gave ground but while it was thinking about what it was gonna do that Mod 60 in my hand with those 5 180grain Hardcasts just seemed to shrink. Rapid-fire with that heavy load in that little revolver just weren’t my forte. Dunno what the ballistics were out of a 3” barrel were either, tho bang and flash sure were loud.

Carried a Glock 29 after that but 10mm ammo was so hard to find, after Mr Shoemaker dropped that griz with a 9mm I figured 15-1 easy to shoot rapid-fire 147gr Hardcasts from a Glock 19 ought work on anything I’d encounter.

Now my son has the 19, my current woods gun is a 9+1 9mm Springfield Armory XDs. I’d still take it over that Mod 60, much as I still admire that versatile little revolver.

I believe I remember reading on here years back that Phil had used the 357 with either hard cast or maybe it was the Hornady tmj. He stated that he trusted it enough that he gave his Smith and Wesson 4 inch to his daughter when she started guiding?

Byron, Phil tested the 357 with his chosen ammo and felt it would work. The bear that I am aware of that Phil used a handgun on in defense is the 9mm

Phil and I had some discussions on these boards about handguns fir bear defense. Phil felt that a handgun wasn't going to stop a bear unless a central nervous system hit and he felt that one needed a pistol with low recoil that could be shot quickly My knee and only bear defense with s pistol was with a 475 Limbaugh and it flattened the bear with a body shot
