I don't wanna give a piece of crap Red Ryder.

Is there a decent BB gun intended for young shooters suitable for plinking?

Check out Gamo, they have some decent single cock air guns.

RWS is way to heavy, and require special scopes because they kick opposite from normal rifles and eat non-air rifle scopes.
Benjamin’s are also good but you have to pump them like crossmans.

I moved from those to a Gamo for squirrels (22 cal for fur, 17 cal for feathers).

At first I went with the low end Daisy. Was terribly inaccurate

Stepped up to a Red Ryder. Was a little bit better, but still sucked

Finally bought a Daisy 499b. It may not be what you're looking, but it is very accurate. I used it to teach my kids to shoot !

I love shooting it because it rewards me if I do my part !

Should have specified that I'm not looking for a pellet rifle.

Is there a decent BB gun available?

Still have the crosman 760 I got when I was about 6 yo. Seals are all shot. But it did me well for years.

RWS 34 is light single shop springer. You can shoot BBs if 177 caliber.

I'm actually shocked that there was or is a step below the red ryder. Year past I've seen shelves full of RRs on clearance for $11.99.

I wouldn't give that much for the whole shelf.

No, there are no decent BB guns unless you really just want what is basically a cheap toy.

Well, they are smooth bore, round ball. so not a whole lot of accuracy at longer ranges. Manufacturers seem to limit their velocity to around 350fps.

That said, I learned a lot about trajectory, lead, and sight adjustment watching that BB fly with an old Daisy.

I just have to think that a single shot, multi-pump pellet gun would be a better option. But hey, I've been wrong before.

FYI - Benjamin 397 direct from Crosman available now for $129.74

Hope the 499b works out, Johnw. I’ve never seen that model before. I started out with a Crossman 2100 and it shot pellets and bb’s pretty well.

Dunno what model this is, but it came from Germany. Might not still be in production but it shoots pretty well offhand.

Prefers lead BB's and there aren't but a few sources I know of.

The Benjy pumpers (I got one, like it) are just too dumb a choice for kids, can be way too hard to pump up. Kids, oddly enough, like something they can handle and that rules out all the German jobs you can't pronounce, Daisy makes a neat single pump, but kids don't single pump, they go for broke and break it when your looking someplace else. The Daisy 35 is a multi pump smooth bore BB repeater (single shot pellet) that, in our tests, shoots a bit closer with BB's than the rifled barrels. And, or course, the Red Ryder is not a piece of crap. Santa doesn't deal in crap.

All of the dual use pellet/BB guns drive BBs too fast to be accurate and the bores are loose with normal BBs. Most BBs are only about .171".
