I applied about a year ago for one of the 8,000 1911's released by the Army to the Civilian Marksmanship Program, and was assigned a number that was too high to be assured of getting one of these pistols. However, 3 weeks ago I received an email from CMP, telling me that a gun was available to me if I wanted it. Apparently there were enough people with lower numbers who either had application packets that were defective, or who declined to purchase a gun.

I opted to buy a Service Grade pistol ( the highest grade that does not go to auction) for $1,050.00. The other two grades are $100.00 and $200.00 cheaper, respectively.

I had left my main home in Michigan and arrived at my winter home in Arizona before the gun could arrive, and it was impossible to change the FFL in my packet without quite a bit of red tape, so the gun will be waiting for me when I return to Michigan in late April. The FFL dealer texted me the photo, and it looks like a pretty nice 1911. I'm looking forward to meeting it.

Sorry, I simply cannot figure out how to attach the photo from the gallery I created to this post. I have had a devil of a time attaching pictures to Campfire posts since Photobucket died. But you can see it by clicking the link below if you wish.

I agree. I have a 1942 dated M-1 Garand and a 1943 dated M-1 Carbine, along with a 1903-A3, and would like to have a sit-down with a tape recorder and all of them

Exactly. I have a 1944 Inland M1 carbine that I wish could talk. It was originally a gift for my Dad, but he giftes it back to me when he knew his time was short.

Congrats on a cool piece, bobby.

Looks great. Anyone have an any idea of when these were originally manufactured?

It looks like mine was manufactured probably in late 1943 by Remington Rand. The CMP guns can be from any era, including WWI. They have all been rebuilt, probably more than once.

Congrats! I was wondering if they got anymore in. I was lucky and was drawn for one of the first batch last year. Yours looks in similar condition to the service grade Remington Rand I received.

They actually have not received any more 1911's since the first batch of 8,000. I only got mine because enough people ahead of me had defective application packets or declined to buy when offered the chance, that they got down to my number. CMP does not know if they will ever get any more 1911's.

Guess I haven't kept up with the CMP forum lately, didn't figure they'd still be working on the original batch. Looks like over 2000 declined/defective packets, great for you! Mine is a '44 manufacture, rebuilt and stored in '80. Like you and others have mentioned, I wonder where it's been? Like my Garand, Carbine, '03A1 and A3, I always wonder if they crossed paths with my father during the war, he used them all during his service in the Pacific theater.

i have bought an awful lot of stuff off the dcm and cmp, but decided to pass on the 1911's. mostly because that addiction started being scratched way before they started offering them, and i bought everyone i came across.
i remember people telling me i was nuts for paying 400pucks for a military 1911.
Given cmp set that floor at about 1000bucks, made me happy with the ones that were all there, hadn't been reparked, etc.
keep in mind the nra was selling them at one time to members in a more enlightened era for about 18 or 19bucks a piece.

that grey finish reminds me hugely of the repark done on garands, carbines etc in the rebuild programs of the 50's.
i have a few garands with the same kind of finish.
i want to say from an imperfect memory, should be a stamp right below those two pins on the frame the imperfect memory without checking crossed cannons.

i know of a inland m1carbine a few years ago, late 44 that was in germany at the end of the war.
long story, but i am pretty sure the old guy brought it home with him.
took all day and a couple of reference books to tear it into pieces, to verify springs etc, but it was all there.
there are still some floating around that havent been molested, if you have the reference books to verify them.
Just a year or so ago, i tripped across both 45acp and m1carbine ammo from WWII in the original boxes and spam cans, never opened.
