Most will disagree, but I enjoy this type of thing. Serial range in the 300,xxx, 303 lightweight. It came to me with mismatched Brushgun and 99C wood and a straight lever. Since the forearm hanger locations were 1/2" different between the older and newer guns, their solution was to redrill the 99C forearm with a new hole to line up with the old style forearm hanger.

My solution was to cut a new slot in the barrel under the forearm for the forearm hanger and leave the wood alone on the pre war R forearm so nothing shows.

It was in great shape, no extra holes.

Before wood and lever, and after- I like the curved lever better so the carbine hangs on my arm easy.

Seems like a win to me, it was already wrong and now it's a really nice shooter, no collector value ruined when it gets wet or dinged up. I will carry this rifle next fall.

I like it. Looks like a model Savage was remiss in not ever making.

Nice to see you back at the bench Roy, is this for your tinkerbell Christmas membership drive application?

Your a man of many talents. I like the job your did very much, wish I could do work like that. Guess it's good to have a lot of spare parts laying around for winter projects.

Looks good.

They did make a 99R in 303, tho. Harder than heck to find one, but they are out there.

22" barrels for the 303 and 250-3000 for the pre-war 99R's.

Nice job but with those stocks and that barrel you are running a risk of this ending up in some future guy’s category of “with Savage, never say never.”

That's what I got out of it. A 1927 99F rifle with later 30's or early 40's prewar 99R wood and new lever.

Heck, I've got a 1933'ish 99R with a takedown 300 Savage barrel. Even Savage did it. grin

You should quit your day job and build custom 99s. You be da man Roy. Hey the other Roy started out in a garage in California a long time ago and look where it got him.

It’s actually #313,xxx, so 1928 and yes, R’s were later, and also yes, stock #’s don’t match. 20” lightweight barrel rather than the medium weight R barrel. Also need to bed the forearm for the lighter barrel so no, it’s going to be obvious it’s not Savage.

20” featherweight barrel and dovetail front sight?

Should be 22” with ramp. Cut? An H would have been 20” with dovetail, but heavier barrel I think.

Roy, to fall up with Rory's post... is the front sight dovetailed directly into the barrel or is there part of the original base (long integral/ramp) still there?

I'm callin' it a model HR, for Home Run!

Don't know what to tell you fellas. it's got a lot of space in the forearm with that skinny little barrel in there.

I think you should stick with 99R for Roy.
