While Carpenter only “officially” knocked out six tanks and countless other kinds of vehicles during the war, it is believed that his kill count was much higher.
One day, Carpenter got bored with his current tactic and decided to land his plane behind enemy lines after he took out a mechanized column. Once on the ground, Carpenter picked up a rifle and took several Germans as prisoners.

Knocked out six German tanks with bazookas jury-rigged onto a Piper Cub, prob'ly about 100 mph (??) in the swoop down to target, Lord know how slow in the climb back out. No armor at all for the pilot.
Makes ya wonder if some Germans let him live because of his courage,

Carpenter actually adopted the idea from other pilots and did then seek approval from Command Headquarters to do the same.
Carpenter in his own words seems to indicate that much of his success was possible because the Germans typically did not go after Cubs , but as they learned of him, they would then open up on Cubs with everything they had.
Sometimes crazy works , many times it just gets you prematurely killed.

BTW; do recall ever seeing the precursors to the modern heli-gunships, like the 1950s B47-H13 with bazookas, or Brownings and rockets attached?....and the later (modified B47) Sioux Scout 207..?
