M1 is a great weapon, but it can’t match the fire superiority of an AR. Which means what in the real, civilian world?

I can kill scht and run kids off my lawn with lots of semi-automatic rifles that don't weigh as much as a set of post hole diggers and use a cumbersome en-bloc clip to operate. Besides, the CMP is ripping people off on those overpriced things. I read just yesterday that the CMP has over $200,000,000 in their bank account right now. That's 200 MILLION! If they were selling them at military surplus prices, which is what they are - surplus, then maybe I could see picking one up. Perhaps I'm just jaded on those heavy sumvamitches from marching around 10,000 miles with the M-14 while I was a cadet at West Point.

Still over priced they made millions of them How many other rifles can you buy from a retail operation, mark it up $200 or so and have it sold by the next weekend?

M1 is a great weapon, but it can’t match the fire superiority of an AR. in the stans, when the russians were there, they were using their version of an ar, the ak74. if they went into a village and found spent .303 shell casings, every body got shot. seems the locals could make kill shots way out there with an old enfield, not so much with the poodle shooter rounds. an m1, or it's son the m14, is still a very effective weapon. I may be a little biased, but never found anyone that didn't want to shoot one of mine.

Except for the satisfaction of owning a "piece of history", what use is an M1 anyway? Kill a commie for Mommie.

About 25 years ago, I bought a Garand through the DCM. At the time, I shot Highpower Rifle. I switched from that to the M1A to the AR. Then I got out of competition and never shot the Garand, so like an idiot I sold it. A few months ago, my wife and I visited a friend of hers in Hartford, CT. We drove the 30 miles north and visited the Springfield Armory National Historical Site. I got the itch again. Fast forward to today. It was a nice sunny winter day so I drove the 86 miles down to Camp Perry and corrected my mistake. I wanted a refurbished one this time and came back with a Service Grade SA M1 Garand with a new stock. It cost a little over $800 out the door but I'm still smiling...

I'd rather have one of those Krag-Jorgensens.

Still over priced they made millions of them Agreed. They should be selling them for a couple hundred bucks. Our tax dollars paid for them to be made in the first place.

Timing is everything. I paid $94.30 for mine back in the DCM days. I did have to pay extra for shipping. There was no choice back then, you got the next rifle in the rack. I got a very nice Springfield with a 1943 barrel date, original locking bar sight and uncut oprod. What a deal.

They help introduce people, mainly the youth, to shooting competitions. I consider it money well spent. I was at Omaha Beach back in June and just had to get one for the history...

they made millions of them, there are not millions of them left. d.c.m. and now c.m.p. sells them to raise money for the shooting sports in lots of areas. I have been acquiring them for years. a pre war garand rebarreled in 1943 didn't sit on a rack somewhere. they also sell a bunch of other things such as target .22's, m1carbines when they were available, 1903, 1903a3 bolt actions, model of 1917's and ammo. they are not there to supply inexpensive guns to the masses. there is a lot of history in these firearms. I bought a m1carbine at the west regional some years ago, just because it had elmer keith's cartouche stamped on it. Meant something to me. as to the kraig's, got a bunch of those too.
