That big bastard wasn’t in a hurry to give up the ghost! Did your friend carry extra cartridges? Imagine I’d feel a bit odd standing there with any empty gun after putting 4 in its chest and it still coming.  He probably wouldn't have had time to reload if the final shot to the head hadn't stopped the buffalo. Good thing it did.

What an amazing creature. Hard to believe he could run like that with all of the solid hits he took from big borers. Tough critters with a will to finish a fight.
