I know it's not an optic, but it is a rifle sight. I have an old Redfield basic receiver sight made for a round receiver and the only ID on it is a S and O stamped on the interior of the base. Extensive searching has failed to turn up an old Redfield application chart or table with the applications. Anyone here know what an 'SO' is made to fit.

I will try to get some pics today, but my picture taking skills for small items are poor. It is a fairly simple sight with the base rounded to fit onto a round receiver and it has an' S O' stamped on the interior that fits against the action.

Wild guesses count? Springfield or Savage??? I hope someone has an answer for you Hook and I hope all is well. Maybe the sight will fit something you own, you could buy something to fit the sight! Sounds like my loony self. it comes out now and then. - OT - I bought a set of loading dies for a Brit303 then bought one. Now there is a set of 284 dies...…. Be Well, someone will have the answer, I'm confident you will be able to ID it. Rustyzipper.

Spect it's for a Springfield since it has an S stamped on it. The added O may well throw it off somewhere else, maybe not.

I, too, have had to buy a rifle because i had dies or such for it. Rifle Loonies do that sorta thing....

I'm not sure why a person can't find application charts online for these vintage sights, but I suspect that the rights to such have been sold and subject to copy right protections. I've searched many times and always come up empty, except... for "Cornell Publications LLC", they print and sell vintage catalogs on various gun related products among others. They have Redfield catalogs going back to 1938, whether they include application charts is another question. They aren't expensive but if they don't include the information you need.

Seems like nearly all searches for historic data always comes back to Cornell Publications.

After the conversation above, I remembered the 1939 edition of the Stoeger catalog I have out in the shop. I bought it off the net because it had Mannlicher-Shoenauers and Hensoldt scopes.....just like the ones I bought last year. Interesting stuff for sale in that thing. You could completely equip yourself for an African safari out of it!

Anyhoo, I decided to check it for Redfield sights. Sure enough, I found Redfield Model 102 S that fits both the Springfield and the Ross(!) rifles. The Model 102 O fits the M39 Marlin, so I know that does not jive. Why one was stamped S O is not clear at all.

Due to the yuuuuge demand, here are pics of the Redfield receiver sight in question. I surprised myself that I was able to get halfway visible pics of this thing.

I think that may be a Redfield Record made from 1965 until 1972. Not sure about the application.

Yessir, went through all of those a few days ago....no 'S O' marked bases. There are a number of bases for different rifles that could be used with this staff. However, my eyes have degraded so much that I can only use irons on large black bullseyes with large white backgrounds. There is no way I can aim on a deer down in the thick stuff with them. So, my main interest here is curiosity. If I can find out what it is intended for, maybe I can find someone that can use it.

Do my eyes deceive me - or is the aperture NOT threaded for an insert ?

Good question, Mark. To be honest, I've never bothered to check it. But, don't go by those pics....they aren't the finest examples of photographic prowess. I'll have tocheck it now to satisfy my curiosity.

Interesting... I would have thought the aperture was threaded, but it is certainly difficult to determine. As far as the application goes, maybe the Springfield Experts will comment?

None of mine have any such stamps, might be an after market gun makers mark, or someone's initials.

Dang it, Boomer....you just like making me run back and forth to the shop, don't you?

Checked the aperture last night and found it was threaded about half way and the threads end in an abrupt shoulder. The side of the aperture that's threaded will cause the base to have to go on the right side(bolt handle side) of the rifle....for what that's worth.

Just for you Boomer, I'll check the mounting screw spacing.....next time I go out there.

Don't bother putting you boots on. The sight is for a Springfield.

It also appears to be the cheaper economy model, made of aluminum and without click adjustments. Competitor to the Williams 5D towards the end of Redfield’s iron sight making days.
