Sooooo my 30th anniversary is in 2020 and I'm giving some thought as to what my wife might want to gift with me. Isn't that thoughtfu of me?
I have a 54 Cal Hawken percussion with 1/48 twist, which she gave me 29 years ago. It shoots round balls well if I keep the velocity down, but I've always wanted one in 1/65 to 1/70 twist so I could ramp up the power level. I've never gotten it to shoot long lead now matter what I tried.
Been thinking maybe I might want a 50 caliber for the full power job. What is a good twist in 50 caliber to shoot round balls at maxed out velocities? I see a lot of 1/48 twists, but I don't think that's going to get it done.
The Pedersoli Tryon Target Deluxe has caught me eye. But in 50 cal it only has 1/48 twist.
Thoughts?

The BIG 30 is not for almost 11 months, so it's a tad early to pull the trigger. But, what's for sale?

Yes, It is that! But I'm just a percussion guy. No desire to start in with flints.

My target chunk gun is spooky accurate with a 1:66" twist rate and the right thickness patches. It likes a .490" round ball and .017" cotton Denim.. Ed Rayl of Gassaway W VA made the barrel. Jerry

If you can still find a Green Mountain drop in, you could put it in a Hawken or Renedgade stock, depending on the diameter of the barrel. The 15/16" will drop into a Hawken 45/50 stock, the 1" will drop in a Hawken .54 or any Renegade stock.
I have one in .50, 1-66" twist. With a peep sight and Lyman globe, it shoots better than a PRB should, with 100 grains of 2F.
I have 4 GM barrels, the only one that doesnt shoot to my satisfaction is the .32.

About this time last year, I found a 54 caliber drop in barrel on TOW but it was back ordered out of stock. Well, last week I got an email from TOW that they were in. 10-minutes later I had it on the way!
It's 32" long and made by GM for T/C, with 1/66 twist. Minor fitting and it dropped right in. Looking good.
Hopefully there is decent weather this weekend so I can wring it out.
