OK what LH actions are long enough and have magazines that will work with a 6.5 PRC.

Ruger Hawkeye 338 RCM or 300 RCM?

Win 70 Short Mags?

Tikka LH actions?

Or what will work?

The response I received from a gunsmith when I asked a similar question:

"The 6.5 PRC is likely to long for a Ruger box. It will work in a short action Rem 700 with the Wyatt window box and follower, made spl for the PRC. I did a 6.5 PRC on a new model 70 243 Win by opening the bolt face and extractor, as well as removing the spacer in the mag box. It worked perfect."

Keep in mind shortly after he replied Ruger began offering the Model 77 Hawkeye Hunter in 6.5 PRC and the overall dimensions lead me to believe it's a short action/RCM-type.

OAL for 6.5 PRC per google is 2.94" will have to measure my SA rifles. There's a Tikka LH in 300 WSM available reasonable would that work and with what Mag. Not interested in the MRC lottery.

Tried 2.94" OAL Dummy in my Tikka 6.5 Creed Moor M type 5 shot Mag it fits, Have a LH 338 RCM and Dummy round needs to be 2.904" OAL to function.

The Tikka short action billet magazines made by Mountain Tactical have a 3" length.

Yep. The 2 MRC short actions I have owned both measured right at 3.125" max magazine length.

I feel like the 6.5PRC begs to be run in a Tikka! Get that 300wsm and change out the bolt stop-- and Hells Canyon Armory also makes a billet mag that will let you seat those long heavies as far out as you please.

I'm working on a lightweight 270wsm off a Tikka as we speak and chose that action specifically to run 156gr Hammers.

I'll be anxious to see your project when its completed. I did not know about Hells Canyon Armory. Are the mags longer than those from Mountain Tactical?

By the way, how's your duck season coming along?

duckhunter,

I have one on the way! I sent my .300 Win to gunsmith Shaen Magan in California and he is installing a 1X8 Hawk Hill cut rifled barrel. Micro bastard brake.

Should be a awesome rig.

Lefty, I sent my 264 for a PRC rebarrel to Shaen as well. Same HH 1-8 #2 contour. I went with the PVA Backcountry brake instead.

OSU-- we have a few birds hanging around but I haven't been out! I only get every other weekend off and I was chasing deer up until two weeks ago-- took a buck with my 10mm and then took my best buck to date early this month!

How have things been your way?

GENTS- I believe to use the full length of the HCA mag you do need the long action bolt stop-- but its the longest 'factory' mag that I've found without moving to AICS bottom metal.

Lefty-- that sounds like a great build! I bet you'll love it- the APA brakes are awesome-- I will also second RTSJ-- I have the PVA 'ultra lite' 3 port which is like 1.4 oz and it works like a charm on my 6.5cm.

Good to hear on your deer season. Things are good up here. We have lots of birds in and there should be some good shooting. I've not been either but will likely get out between Christmas and New Year. Will you be able to get to DSC for a day?

Laffin ! ! ! ... Sold 95% of my .375H&H components In Sept. In early November, bought back a .375H&H I built 10 years ago intending to re-barrel to .300H&H. Cobbled together some .375H&H handloads to confirm feed, fire, and ejection. Now wish I still had my stash of .375 bullets... laugh

Kurt,

Don’t shoot the 300WSM, it will shoot great and then you will be looking for another donor action.

Seems if you could find a Tikka 6.5 Creedoor barrel SS and rechamber to 6.5 PRC, and install it on a Magnum bolt face, like the 300 WSM, you would have a LH SS 6.5 PRC? Would the rechamber clean up with no issue?

Seems like a lot of work when you can just get a 6.5PRC pre-fit for a Tikka without all the hassle.

There is a guy I've shot with here in Texas selling two Tikka barrels-- one is a Krieger 6.5PRC and then other is a factory 300wsm chopped to 21"-- brass and dies for both I think-- literally would be a screw on, almost switch barrel type deal with a mag bolt face Tikka action...

Definitely a good choice on the tikka for a prc build.

Just an FYI on tikka magazines, I have a left hand 270 wsm with long action bolt stop so I can run bullets how ever far I want. I first started with a factory wsm magazine that I removed block. I have since bought a mountain tactical long action magazine and HCA magazine. Specs are as follows

Factory magazine
-2 rounds
3.38 max oal
1.3 ounces

Mountain tactical long magazine
3 rounds
3.42 max oal
3.1 ounces

HCA magazine
3rounds
3.39 max oal
3 ounces

All feed perfectly from my rifle so my preference is for the HCA just because of the bumps that keep rounds from sliding forward during recoil

I’m sorry kk but I’m gonna reccomend the HCA magazine with the replacement long action bolt stop. It’s just to small of an investment in time and money to not recommend it. With those mods you will end up with the best option available for the 6.5 prc. Just my humble opinion

Just hells canyon armory for the mag and then mountain tactical for the bolt stop. google will bring up their website.
The bolt stop replacement is really simple. Pm me with your number and it can walk you through it. I’ll gladly talk with you about any other questions you have as well. I look forward to hearing from you!
