For those that might have a slight interest in the 30-06s history, here you go...
The cartridge was adopted by the military, and quickly went into production in civilian(Sporting)form.
We are only interested in the sporting rounds, as the Winchester model of 1895, the last levergun ever to be designed by J. Browning, was chambered specifically for the 30-06.in the year 1908.
Inaugaral sporting rounds included the 150, 180, and 220 gr. bullets. According to ballistics of the time, the 150 reached approx. 2700fps, the 180 approx. 2400fps, and the 220, approx. 2300fps, or the identical velocity of parent 30-03, which was also loaded with a 220gr. bullet, and was also chambered in the 1895.
Hopefully such plain english will be understood by all.
The first sporting 30-06 rounds were loaded by Remington, Winchester, and Western. Match cartridges were also produced for the civian market.
While the model 1895 was fully capable of handling lighter bullets, many chose the heavier variety, finding them superior in close quarters against large game. Thus, the cartridge companies loaded 180 and 220 grain bullets-to answer the demand.
This is the documented history of the cartridge as it pertains to leverguns. Interestingly, the 30-06 continues with unabated appeal as a sporting round long after the military forgot all about it.
P.S. Note that the discussion is centered around sporting cartridges, not military ones.
P.S.S. The above abbreviated history is easily verifyable by anyone with a modicum of intelligence and motivation.
Final Note; Trolls need not reply.
Good Luck and Good shootin

The Peters old style "Outer belted" 225grain hp was concidered to be right ideal for Lion by sportsman after WWI and before WWII.
Western cartridge loaded a 220grain capped soft point that was also a great round for large and toothy game.

All of the Cartridge companys of the 1920's leaned towards heavy weight bullets.
200grain semi-pointed soft-points were common.

Can anyone think of a better combo than a 1895 30/06 with a 200grain semi-pointed SP?
99% of North America game would be covered.

I've found the 95 with hard cast bullets to be great.
Not used it on game but it'a accurate with 200 grain round nose cast bullets.

I have but one Winchester 1895 and it is a 7.62X54R Musket.
My shooter is a Browning 1895 30/40krag which loves 220grain RN.
I've loaded 200grain cast-GC for my krag and it is a house a fire!
Best thing a like about using my 1895 is being told by some yeahoo how much farther and flatter thier Magnum will shoot when compared to my "wall hanger"! grin
First I have to explain that it is a reproduction using modern steel and that it kills just fine if I do my part!
Anyway that is why they call it "HUNTING" and not "Shooting" at game!

Then they stammer and stutter while I get to say that this is what seperates the Hunters from the shooters!

I would hunt any animal on this earth with a 30-06 and a proper 200 or 220 gr. bullet, including elephant. In fact I have done that with the exception of elephant, Lion and Hippo and of course the Rhino which I have not hunted, nor do I intend to. I have however seen Lions shot with the 06 and it performed with excellence. I know more than a few PHs that have culled elephant with the 06, and many are culled each year with the .308 and military ball ammo in automatic weapons.
