The Thin Red Line was an example of a movie that never could get going. James Jones' novel was actually a good read.

Eaters of the Dead or 13th Warrior by Michael Critchton was an awesome book. The movie, which I enjoy immensely did not do it justice and doesn't follow it very well at all.

I also really like the Count of Monte Cristo (2002 version) but I don't think any screenwriter can do Alexandre Dumas justice.

On the flipside, a mediocre book that made a great movie: Gone to Texas. The movie adaptation is called The Outlaw Josey Wales.

You can blame that on Mike Landon's real life narcissistic egotism. He demanded that virtually every story revolve around him ... plus, Mike loved to cry on camera. He was pretty good at it.

Sahara - good book turned into a garbage movie.

Last of the Mohicans - great movie, unreadable book.

Jack Reacher books. Reacher is NOT Tom friggin' Cruise.
I refuse to see Tom Cruise in anything. He only knows how to play Tom Cruise.
And casting him as Jack Reacher must be some kind of Joke.

Watching the second one tonight.

Have not seen the remake but when I first saw this thread "IT" is what came to mind. The first movie wasn't even in the same universe as the book.

Point of Impact by Steven Hunter - also known as Shooter. Modernized by the movie and not nearly as cool as the book.

Around here it was known as "Little Joe on the Prairie”.

When I was a kid watching Bonanza reruns in the late afternoon I found something else to do once I figured out it was a Little Joe centric episode.

The River Why was a great book, but the movie completely sucked.

The Mosquito Coast was a very good read and the movie failed to catch much of the real story.

Tough Guys Don't Dance cannot even blame the disconnect between writer and director. Mailer screwed up the movie in pathetic fashion...
