Short firing pin shrouds "plugs" as Rem calls them were nothing more than left over 721/722 parts.

If original,said trigger group should have the left over 721/722 2 piece sear safety bars.

Do you have a preference for certain serial number ranges?

bump

I wasn’t sure either, but looking at my Ken Waters pet loads last night he has a pic of one that he used to work loads up, and of course had glowing remarks about how well it shot. I’ve yet to see one, but sure would like too, thanks.

The short shroud varmint specials that I am after have the aluminum butt plate, and square (barn door) safety. As long as it firs that criteria I’m interested, my understanding was they changed in ‘68 or ‘69? Thanks.

Remington made the short shrouds from 1962 -1968. They had aluminum butt plates and a fleur de lues (SP) stamped pattern on the stock. I have several .222's, 22/250's, and a 6MM. All are near mint and I might sell on of the 22/250's. They have great triggers and shoot very well. It is hard to find a nice one for under a Grand and many are priced above that. They are getting very difficult to find and are really nice rifles.

The Varmint Special in 308 didn't come out until after the pressed checkering models.

Those who call magazines "clips" and cartridges "bullets" ought not to be taken seriously. Jeff Cooper.
We might add those who call bullets "boolits.

That and the .223 were the two I wasn’t sure about, Appreciate the info, so that makes it a two caliber search.

Don't know if you have any interest in building one, but I have a factory take-off barrel from an early Varmint Special in .223. It has the factory-filled screw holes for the Unertl/Lyman scope bases. Shiny bore and new 11 degree crown. 23 1/4" OAL. Some minor scratches from being on a metal shelf, but it's good to go. Shiny bore & Varmint profile, factory markings. $75 shipped . If interested, email;
