I may be doing some trading this week for an "early" G six digit stainless Classic. Its a 338 wm with black synthetic. Looks to be in pretty good condition. Whats approximate value? I don't know if I need it living in Michigan but some day I am moving to Alaska.

You can use it in Michigan. I think the 338wm fits in anywhere a 30-06 does, with the exception of very lightweight builds. At least for me.
I’d say 600-900 or so. Depending on condition.
Best of luck.

Yep. $650-$700.
One currently on GB with a few hours to go at $650 and no bids.

You are absolutely correct. I was thinking of another I had on my watch list. That one is PF.

Not sure if you ended up trading for it; if not (or if I were looking for one) I’d be hard pressed to pass this one. Good deal from an equally good guy ...

79s does a pretty good job of staying on top of these prices. One thing I can say is most of the guys that have the early classic stainless 338's, hang on to them pretty tightly. I know a couple different guys that have them locally, but they cherish their elk rifles, just as much as some guys cherish their original pre 64 Alaskan's. I run across 30-06 and 270 classics quite regularily, but never the 338's. They are generally very good shooters too. The guys around here run 210 partitions for elk hunting and they are devastating on elk. Good luck to the OP. Should be a great rifle. If you intend on shooting it, replace that hard butt pad with a pachmayr decelerator and thank me later...

I have 13 classics, my bud has more, I'm sure others have more than me.. The 30-06 and 270 classics I wouldn't pay over $650 for them. I have 25-06 (5 digit) L/H 270 (6 digit) stainless classic in a 270 (5digit), blued featherweight in a 270 (5digit), blued featherweight in a 7-08 (5digit) blued featherweight 280 (5digit) classic sporter 30-06 (6 digit) stainless classic 300 Weatherby (6 digit) stainless classic 300 RUM (6 digit) stainless featherweight classic 338 wsm (7 digit rebored from a 325 wsm) stainless classic 338 win mag (5 digit) and last in the herd hard to find stainless classic in a 375 H&H (6 digit) The most I paid for any of them was $950.. the 2 r/h model 70's picked up less than $600. If you keep your nose to the wind you can find some great deals. I mainly keep my eye out for the limited run chambering in the classic. One day I'm going to find me a 6mm in featherweight classic, followed by a 6.5 Swede..

Those are two hard to come by chambering s that’s for sure.
I had a 270 weatherby in a classic sold it. I had the chance at a classic in a 6.5 Swede but passed on it.

I thought so, but wasn't sure where they stood in order of rarity. I ordered the 6.5 new from my LGS in 04 or 05, right before the New Haven plant closed. I wanted a 257Rob but it wasn't offered that year so I went with the Swede, it is one of my favorites. The 270 I happened upon. A family member called me and told me about a friend of his that had terminal cancer and he had a bunch of guns and reloading equipment he wanted to unload. I went over and met his him and his wife, they knew my family well. I bought his 270Wby he bought new in 1996 or 97 along with all the reloading supplies for it. He bought it at the same shop I bought my Swede from. I think he went on 1 hunting trip with it and it set in the safe the rest of it's life, it is in excellent condition. He passed away a few weeks later. I haven't shot either of them very much. The 270 has a 26" barrel and is kind of heavy. My Swede is like a baby, don't want to ding it up! I have a bunch of others with plastic stocks that get that abuse!

Thanks for all the help. I did wind up trading for the 338 but now after shooting it twice Ive decided to sell it already. My shoulder isn't the strongest after surgery for a detached bicep and rotator cuff repair. I know I could download it but I already have a nice 30-06 classic stainless featherweight for that power level. Anyway, I just listed it for sale here.
