Few questions. My first rifle was a Winchester 30-06 that I sold to fund some youthful travels. Lately I’ve been interested in a CRF rifle with iron sights. Any insight would be great on this rifle. I’d probably add a pad and blue the bolt handle.

Man, that’s a perfect P64 to not cut on. Just my opinion, but there are other P64’s that are already chopped with pads you may get for less money as well.

I’m all for doing what you want, but that rifle looks pretty correct as it sits with very honest wear.

Good luck with whatever you do, but that’s a good one you pictured. Maybe a touch high in price but it is looking all original so that carries a little weight with me. I’d probably pull that original stock and out a stock you like on it, just so you could always sell it or gift an original Riflemans Rifle!

Thanks Beretzs. I just had a carbon fiber stocked .280 built on a G series Remington action that is my do it all but may take a trip to Africa late summer and wanted something classic. The 280 setup is also overkill for stand hunting whitetail.

Do you mind letting me know the reasons? I’ve read about the 3 generations of pre-64s but am generally ignorant as to what makes one desirable.

Pass on that rifle cause it's overpriced plain and simple.

You may be right. Seems like for my intended use something that is already cut with a pad may be more affordable.

You can do better than that, last year I found a .30-06 FWT in similar condition with a pad for $730.00. Be patient you'll find one, there are several out there.

It would be a crime to cut that for a pad. It does seem a bit high too for what Pre 64s are going for these days, but it is pretty clean looking. Maybe the transitions are worth more now. I paid $500 for mine made in 48 in .270 Win., but that was over 20 years ago now. Time flies.

Agree. Lots of shooter grade 30/06 out there, both fw and std. $700-$800 will buy you a nice representative. Be patient.

mr. eamyrick: there's a couple of pre-64 06's on gunbroker right now for under $700. One for $575. with rotted recoil pad: no bids on it. Just shooter grade rifles: worn but I'm sure very functional. Lots of good 30-06s out there for $700.ish.

A couple guys I know have picked up shooter grade 70s in 30-06 in the past year in 400-500 price range. The market is soft right now for guns. Be patient and something will come your way soon

Agreed the firearms market is soft at the moment but a Winchester pre'64 M/70 for $400 - $500 may be wishful thinking.

Heck I have a Pre64 in 30-06 I can't sell for $650, but I ain't going lower.

Stick to your guns/price, lots of buyers trying to pressure sellers into selling their guns for rediculous prices using the soft market tactic.

I picked up a really nice 1961 FWT in 30-06 with a pad for 675 out the door last month from a gun shop. Metal was really great. I even swapped out alum floor plate for another rifle!

Actually saw one of the M70s today that my coworker picked up for $500. Has a custom but amateur wood stock that I would definitely replace if it was mine. Hes going to use it as is and most likely trade it off in a year to two. For what he paid for it, its not bad.

There are some really good values out there lately. Definitely a good time to be acquiring some great hunting rifles.

EBAY has dozens of M70 stocks and 99.999% have been hacked off and a recoil pad added. I personally don’t think a recoil pad is needed for anything less than the Big magnum calibers. That M70 weighs 8 1/4# an 8# 30/06 has mild recoil even with heavy loads. Trying to find a decent M70 stock without a recoil pad is not easy. If your mind is set on the pad you could buy the rifle and sell the stock and buy two of the recoil ones. An uncut stock sells in the 300-400 range the chopped ones can be had for less than a 100.The rifle in the pic is definitely over priced I paid less than their asking for a 1950 30/06 still in the box fired only at the factory. If that one sells I’m thinking of putting mine up for sale lol.

Getting tougher to find vintage rifles with the original metal buttplates in place. 30-06's don't kick that much at all...LEVER B...

Not really. They are out there. Like the others have said, just have to be patient, but diligent. I suggest keeping an eye on sights like armslist, gb, and gunsamerica to name a few. Or local shops. That's where I score on a lot of my rifles. I'm not going to post a pic of my pre 64 30-06 fwt that i pad $475 for just a few months ago.......... Well screw that, yes I will:



Would I be stupid enough to re-sale this rifle at that price? HELL NO!!!!! Just sayin. The market is soft as can be, but that will change. Got to be patient with that as well...

That is a nice looking rifle.

I got this one fairly cheap (.30-06 standard grade) because the finish was almost gone and the floorplate was rusted. No cracks or gouges though, and the floorplate wasn't pitted. I had a buddy re-do the stock, re-cut the checkering (on both the buttplate and stock), and re-blue the floorplate. It's now a great shooter that also looks pretty good. I don't have any worries taking this one out for deer and pigs. Look around for an M70 that's been slightly molested. Should be LOTS of gently used .30-06s and .270s out there.

Beautiful rifles guys. I’m a sucker for those red pads. Went to DSC on Thursday and messed with a mess of pre-64s quite a few of which were 375s. The sickness is real. Of course my water pump and O2 sensor were replaced last week in my truck and the hot water heater went out last night leaking through the ceiling on my 3 year olds room. Waiting on the plumber now. Ain’t life grand?

Isn't that the truth!!! Every where I go I see them. Some so damn low in price I have to keep telling myself to either walk away or pull out the wallet... Some I've seen on online places and pawn shop listings where I've called on them and told them to hold on to them for me. "I live 100 miles away, but am interested!!!. Did that with my last 375 that I paid less than market value for....:

....but i'll put it to you this way, as soon as I decide to sell the Leupold that was on it, the rifle will have only cost me $125.00...
