Any of ya all got anything lined up.
Find a gem in the rough in vg or better mechanical condition anywhere yet???
Pawnshops around here should be getting good real soon.
Lost pawns from people pawning rifles for christmas money.
Pawning em from dead relatives estates.
People pawning handed down guns for the need to feed vices.
keep ears open for dudes selling guns outa desperation
Looking in the local peddler for sale paper every thursday
Ect ect ect
1 mans loss is anothers SCORE!!!

Got kinda burnt out last year myself.
Did 4 or 5 ....
Cant really remember.
Wheeled and dealed in alot of guns over the past couple years
Have kept several that have made it to Core group guns to be kept and hunted
Most others get sent down the road.
Gonna limit my focus on 2 max this year.
I got hemmed up time wise during the winter lull between end of deer and start of turkey and vice versa end of turkey and start of deer.

Gonna be hitting gun shows

Looking for a win 94 in 30- 30 or .32 spl
Might try the eastern carbine thing again.
Looking for a pre safety marlin 444

Maybe another mauser if I can find a rare one again.
Even looking for a russian tula sks with a blade bayo maybe.

I just dunno....

Price and mechanical condition are driving factors.

Just dunno............
Give myself a time line of end of 1st week of February to find something for a winter project.

Cleaning bores down to metal as of late. Getting ready to send some rounds down range this winter. Also have some Dyna Bore Coat arriving tomorrow and plan to test it out on a few rifles and see if all the reviews are accurate.

Front to back-

99R 243 stock repair

38-55 special order carbine, stock repair, fitted an extra 410 barrel to the frame, refinish

99DL stock refinish (experimenting with stain streaking) waiting for it to dry to smooth and seal.

30-30 made from parts, reshape buttstock from an aftermarket club

Replace broken extractor (2 years ago). on 725. Still, it took 2 bull caribou last August as a shake-em-out single shot . smile

Fire and tweak as necessary the slightly used, very good shape 70xtr (81 vintage it appears) in 7x57 that I picked up a few months ago.

Will absolutely replace the hard recoil pad, at least. Probably I will glass bed it, possibly full length unless it is MOA as is. Doubtful, but won't know until I wing a few rounds out there. I know that there are several random pressure spots along the barrel channel. That can't be good, and will go away before I fire it.

It was -27 this morning, never got above -12 all day. It will wait. At least a week, as the forecast ain't changing much, more likely a few months. or as I can incrementally for a "fun" break.

Buy a couple more scopes and put them on the rifles that are currently nekkid, and shoot them in.

Possibly replace the Stub's 17" 30-06 bbl with an untried take-off .270 barrel I have on hand. Just for chits and grins. Might be a bit easier on the ears. Then put the stubby back on if the takeoff doesn't work out.

First, I have to finish a couple other repair projects and set up my gun-work bench and area.

Hopefully by spring I will only be hopelessly behind. smile

Renegade,

I like the way you think. My biggest problem is time, second would be a real depth of gun knowledge & value. Sure I could do ok on more popular, but may miss out on more discreet deals. I’m more of a car guy, but there to, it’s time.

As far as what’s on my plate, I picked up a .350 Legend upper I need to mount up and shoot, I’m still waiting on my local Smith for my 6.5 SAUM, and I also need to build two ARs with my son. We have all the parts collected.

My offering would be to say to hold whatever you might be selling until tax refund time.

Good thread.

a few on the front burner:

chopping a Lyman GPR into something handy. 6" off the bbl, 1 " off the LOP. Cone barrel and some other stuff.

DIY work on a Pietta 1851 Navy 44. Trying to turn basically an assembled box of parts into actual gun.

and some Liposuction on a pre 64 70 stock....so it feels like holding a rifle and not a 4x4

Found a used and abused Rem 788 in .308 for $150.

Mostly dirty. I mean dirty. I doubt the bore had ever been cleaned.

After 2 hours of soaking and scrubbing, the bore looked great. The exterior turned out better than expected. No deep pits, most of the surface rust came off, only leaving some freckling.

The stock is fugly and had been painted. An old recoil pad was added at some time, and LOP is a perfect 14". I may repaint the stock, maybe not.

I reassembled and mounted up a scope.

Five rounds into about 1.5" at 100.

I just finished bedding, free floating, and removed the front and rear sights.

I'll see if it will go sub MOA with the bedding and perhaps some load development.

Bought a Kimber 84M Montana in 223 from Whittaker Guns.

Ordered a Mod84M 1-9 twist 17 caliber barrel from Lilja.

When the barrel lands everything will go to Alberta Tactical Rifle to be put together as a 17 Remington.

My "light" coyote rifle.

The "heavy" is a Kimber 84M Varmint 22-250 in a Wildcat stock.

I'm building a 35 Whelen on a VZ24 donor (ex-Bubba) and putting a new stock and scope on my favorite old Swedish Mauser Sporter.

Ran into one bout 2 weeks ago at a pawn america here in town
Was really tempted at intial look
Looking at it on the rack abour 10 ft away.
Looked like an aftermarket syn stock on it and a nice semi matte finish.

Granny ffl holder handed it over to me after jarring 3 other rifles with it taking it out of the rack.
I made comments like
That was a 20 buck scratch just put on it.
Oops their is a 10 buck gouge in the stock
She wasnt even hearing me, totally oblivious to the planet.
But other employees were hearing the clanging and banging and my comments and doing eyerolls watching her.
Someone had spray painted the entire rifle with that textured coating spray paint and the price was $299 ( lmfao inside myhead)
Asked to remove the trigger lock so i could check function, the bolt face for signs of recession and the bore.
Nope she wouldnt do it.
Company policy....
Im like well thats funny cause all the other pawn america shops in town have no problems letting me in depth examine guns. Hell they have even let me pull bores with a boresnake when i run home and get one and have even let me disassemble guns to take pics of marks.

She just clams up and is giving me the rainman look while i am " examining" it.
The crown looked semi decent at least......
But the 1st half inch of bore angling it to the lights looked like a peruvian copper mine...

Another employee on the sly told me come back on wensday when granny wasnt their and i could examine it like I asked too.
Never went back...
Specially at $299 and it just coming out of pawn for sale.
I have dealt with this granny before and her careless handling of guns in the rack.
And her numbnuts full blown retail sale valuations.

Told her no way i would buy it at 299
175 to 200 otd would be my best offer and that was after i was allowed to examine it.
Nope cant look at it like you want.
Told granny
Would you buy jewelry or shoes without checking em out or trying em on

She looked at me like a bitter old hag and said this is a gun being sold As Is.

I chuckled at her a little and said As Is based on a condition examine or As Is based on what you think about it.

Once again got the rainman look briefly and she said are you done looking at it.

Yep I sure am I geuss.....

No sale.
LOL...
she clanged and banged it back up in the rack...

Gawd.....
Hahahaha!!!!

Other employees in the place have said to me in the past she should not be allowed to handle and deal with the guns and their sales in guns are way less than the other shops in town.
But the FFL is under her name and when she is their it is her little world for her and only her to deal with in her mind.

I have at times been tempted to call corparate and ask WTF is up with this one shop.

Their are 4 pawn america,s in town.
I dont remember ever doing a transaction in this one shop over the years.
Their inventory compared to the other shops sucks for selection and condition also as a whole.

Lots of time guns from this shop get transferred to the others to sell
Per corparate directive after x amount of time.

Cause granny is hardheaded.

Lol!!!

I have an old Douglas XX premium.40 caliber barrel, 42", 13/16 AF; out in the shop that needs to be stuck in a piece of wood. Also a large Siler flintlock that is missing a part or two. Would look good with that barrel. I’m thinking either a schimmel or a southern poboy basic, frontier trash rifle might be in the makin’.

If renegade is on the lookout for a winter project, then I guess it's not going to do me any good to hit those Ft. Campbell and Clarksville pawn shops looking.

He'll have already beat me to any bargains.

Hoptroppolis shops are too far for me to roll man .

Thats your ground dude.

No telling what joes old lady has brought in the shops down here on the way to nashvegas for a weekend with her boyfriend while joe is deployed and she ditched the kids to a baby sitter.

Sorry joe...
You lost your marlin 36g
Your customized k98 done by sako after ww2
Your early winchester 1400 MK II with no plastic parts.
Those are core group guns to be held onto.

Many others have moved down the road.

When I walk into a gun/pawn shop with a laptop and a fiber optic borescope, it makes for some interesting negotiations on used rifles! One place that happened was in one of those Clarksville pawn shops. The price came tumbling down, and I walked out of there with a very nice rifle with a minimum of haggling.

Not a rifle. Double 12 LC Smith made in 28. Youngest son found for me. Had busted buttstock and a few issues inside I’m working on now. Should be a nice light load paper hull gun when I get it together.
