Well i just got the new issue of guns& ammo with an article about the new 125 anniversary savage in it ! Needless to say im a bit dissapointed with it . eek The author Craig Boddington needs to do a bit more on his savage history !!!!! In his article he states that the first savage bolt action centerfire that he was "AWARE" of is the model 340 !!!!!! What the hell ,wheres the research. The model 1920 as well as the 20-26 and the model 40 and 45 sporters ,i guess they just dont exhist to the modern sporting writers. Maybe some here might know this person and set him straight on a bit of savage history !!!!! mad mad Don

I wouldn't look to the magazines as sources of historical information, which I assume you aren't. However, the writers should do a better job when taking stabs at historical research.

Yea, when talking centerfire many ignore the smaller caliber centerfires like the 1919D and 23D in 22 Hornet and the 23B & C... wink

oops... I got to pay more attention to the history myself, it should be the 19D, they had stopped using the full date by the time it was introduced..... blush

oops again!!!! 19H <==== this

Yah, you'd think a "perfeshionall righter" would get it right. Either that or stick to what you know.

I just breezed through the article. Like most, there are some errors and omissions, but, still a lot of good info chocked in.

That name rings a bell. I'm pretty sure this is not the first article he has written about Savage that was full of ignorant declarations.

I suggest we all send him some polite recommendations.

His revue of the 125, and other. info about savage was good. I just think he should have done more research. Im not big into professional hunter hunting. When i go hunting i usually go by myself.

He has his own show on Outdoor Channel and writes for lot of outdoor mags including trapping magazines. Usually interesting but not always factual.

This guy has been writing for outdoor magazines for the past 30 years. When writers get to this stage of their career most of them sit down about 3 hours before their deadline and bang something out and "send it in".

Sort of like college professors with "tenure". They are untouchable no matter what they do.

I sure am not the one to say but wasn't that rifle kinda/sorta the first bolt action hunting rifle made by a major manufacturer specifically for hunting etc? The state of modern journalism is sad indeed.

Professional writer, just means he gets paid to write. Not to be accurate and in depth.

300 Savage

PS: I bet that one of the regulars on this site could have done a better job, better being accurate.

It was, Winchester didn't come out with its model 54 untill 1925,and Remington didn't come out with its model 30 untill later also. With the 1920 chambered in the 250-3000,and 300 it had a lot going for it !!!

Didn't Remington market a bolt action sporting rifle pre-1900, the Remington Keene? Was the Winchester Hotchkiss ever made as a sporter? Forget not the Winchester Lee. I'll ignore the plethora of European bolt action sporters built by Steyr, Mauser, et al.

American sportsman had to be dragged kicking and screaming to see the benefits of bolt guns. That and droves of Doughboys fresh from the Army who had their eyes opened to the world of gunnery via bolt action high powered rifles- the '03 Springfield and M1917 Enfield.

I often wondered why Savage didn't resurrect and gussy up the M1920 in the 1930's to compete with the 54/70 and 30 instead of trotting out the 40/45 Sporter/Super Sporter.

That is a legitimate question. My thought would be maybe they were shooting (pun intended) for a different market. (cheap).

Things being what they were in the 30's not many people could afford new rifles...

Gary, I know the remington -keene and the hotchkiss were around, but they were old black powder guns, not high velocity smokeless powder firearms. If i remember correctly the savage 1920 was around $60.00 ,pretty high priced during depression time.I also heard they got into a lawsuit from mauser, over the design, maybe rumor cant remember for sure. Savage lost the right to make the 1920/26 and was broke after a long court

battle it lost because the bolt action was not Savage they tried to steal it.

Also that is why production was stopped on the 25 cal.pistol another law suit

that Savage could not win.
