My Marlin 336Y came from the factory in .30-30 with a 16.25", 1:10" twist barrel, 12 3/4" LOP, matte black finish on all metal, and with a cheap lacquer finish on the birchwood stock. I sent it to Regan Nonneman for a rechamber to .307 Win; added the XS scout rail with peep and front blade, Leupold low quick release rings and a Burris 2.75x20 scout scope. (The final upgrade will be a Ranger Point Medium Loop Lever.)

I stripped the Mar-shield finish as best I could with a citrus stripper paste, boxed up the stock and sent it to John_Boy in TX. My pictures don't do justice to his work or the deep, olive green color. I am very pleased with how it came out. Thanks, John!

That's really cool. It is almost the exact same set up that I have.

I have a Marlin 336 Glenfield in 30-30 with an 18in barrel. I used the XS rail but the one that does not have the peep sight. Instead the rifle has a Lyman receiver sight. I mounted a Burris 2x -20mm pistol scope with the same Leopold low mount quick detach rings that you used and added sling swivels.

It's a very handy package.

I really debated the XS rail and peep vs a Lyman or Willams peep. I had a Lyman on a Marlin 1895, and it really shot well. I decided on the XS, as many do, because the scout setup is necessary with the short LOP to reduce the potential for over-the-eye bloodshed. I haven't fired a round with the rifle yet, but I'll load for it this weekend and get it to the range soon.

That’s a nice setup! The scout scope & rail on the short LOP is a good decision.

How do you like that .307?

This Marlin is unfired. I had previously owned a Win94 XTR in .307 Win, but it was too pretty to take into the woods. I am all set up to load .307 (.308 dies with a .30-30 shellholder), and I have several hundred Berry’s 150 gr FN plated that I will load over mild charges of pulldown IMR4895 to break it in with at the range. Then I’ll work up some 130 & 150 gr Speer FN and some 170 gr Nosler PTT RN for hunting loads with RL15 and Varget. I’ll load T/C-Contender-level charge weights to keep that 16.25” barrel from spitting too much fire!

Oh, yeah.... The Ranger Point Marlin Loop Lever is now installed. It’s a nice improvement!
