Picked up a Savage 340 in 222 Rem today at the LGS for $175(good friend owns the shop and i was there when he bought it for 100). Stock is in pretty good shape, metal is good, bore looks great. Has the scope mount with some old Bushnell scope chief scope on it. First order of business is changing scope then shoot it. Grabbed a box of Hornady 50gr Vmax ammo while i was there. If it shoots decent I will pick up necessary supplies and roll my own.

Anyone own one of these models and have any comments on them. Also any decent recipes for this caliber?

On a side note I also picked up a Savage 219 in 30-30 with a 20 gauge 220 barrel with it for $150. Locks up tight and seems functional. Wood is ok. Receiver metal is decent. Rifle barrel has good metal and bore looks good. Shotgun barrel is discolored some on exterior and bore has some minor pitting.

Pretty decent haul for just going in there for 223 ammo lol

I think you did pretty good on both guns. I have owned shot and sold quite q few of the 340,s (also the same gun with different model numbers depending what store sold them). Every one of them , all still in use, shoot very good and are accurate. The main thing is making sure you pick up a few magazines before they all disappear. If you change scipes and find you don't have goo eye relief, remember there are two different lengths of the side mount rings. I have had find the longer mount when the guys took their short 4x scopes off and tried to mount a long variable on it. The ring spacing is the difference between the long and short. They may still be available, but doubtful. e-bay would be a good plae to look and I may still have some.
As far as loads, I just remember shooting the 52 gr Hornady BTHP with IMR 4198, and also the 50 gr. HP with 4198 also hornady. They both work good on coyotes and the occsional deer.
If you have any questions, PM or e-mail me and I will maybe be able to help you enjoy a nice old rifle.

Try the Scope Chief before changing it out you may be surprised - they were a better quality scope in their day.

The 340's are pretty cool.

Had some experience with the .222 version when I was a kid. I would not change a thing to it regardless of how it shoots.

Just to update this, finally got to shoot this thing yesterday. Shoots plenty accurate enough as is with some federal blue box 50gr SP, which is all the LGS had in stock. The old scope chief proved adequate for the 100 yd shooting I was doing! This ones definately a keeper! Have a few other dedicated predator rifles but this one may see some duty as well.

Got one in 30.30 that shoots very well. The trigger sucks but it kills deer every year for my nephews.

I’m a hand loader but the PPU 50 Gr SP shoots very good in my Tikka

I've got the Stevens 840 (same gun) that was my dad's. He filed the trigger ALMOST too much. He was loading 22.5. Grains imr 3031 and 50 gr.nosler. I put together some 52 gr berger loaded with 20 gr. H 4198 that shoot really well. Loading at max with some 50 gr hornady I had pressure signs, stiff bolt lift. My biggest issue with a bit square mount is I can't get a good check weld. I added a neoprene pad, but thinking of trying a Boyd's adjustable comb stock.
