I’ve always used a standard crosshair atop my Win70 Classic in 30-06 but I’d really like to try a nice bdc reticle before I take my 1st trip out west this fall chasing some muleys. I don’t want anything too busy. Just would like to see how well I could shoot one at a bit longer distances. Anybody have any good recommendations for an easy bdc reticle to get along with in a good quality optic?

Burris Ballistic Plex...pretty well spot on for a .30-06 in 165 or 180 gr. Easy Peasy.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. I also like Nikon’s BDC with the 30-06. I have a Monarch 5 on top of one of my 30-06 rifles and the reticle is perfect for 180 Accubonds out of that gun.

Does Doug from CameraLand sell the Burris scopes?

I noticed the Burris Veracity 3-15x50 has the ballistic plex in a FFP ... that could be nice since it wouldn’t matter then what power scope is set at the distances would remain the same

I'd also recommend the Burris Ballistic Plex. The reticle is clean/uncluttered. But more importantly, Burris' online ballistic tables and reticle tools are really easy to use. They have the ballistic information for pretty much every factory load and the information for all their reticles. So you can easily play around with selecting what distance to set your zero with respect to the hold over points on the reticle. You can also get a good idea of what happens as you crank your SPF scope through it's power range.

I have a Leica ER 5 for sale and it has the ballistic reticle in it.

A regular plex is useful for rangefinding and holdover and you get more scope options with a plex reticle.

Find a plex reticle subtending 9 moa from intersection - to the thicker plex.

A 30-06 sighted for 200 yards with a 165-180 grain bullet is "about" 2.5" high at 100 yards, dead on at 200, and 8-9" low (= 3 moa) @ 300 yards, and 25-27" low at 400 yards (~ 6 .5 moa).

That means a 300 yard shot, your bullet impact aiming point is 1/3 down from the intersection ( 3 moa hold over, 1/3 down the 9 moa thin vertical cross hair part of the reticle., Or- hold the cross hair intersection on the top of the back/hairline, and the bullet will impact 3 moa (300 yards) , or 8-9" lower. ..right into the boiler room for a high lung-shoulder shot.

A 400 yard shot, bullet impact will be 6.75 ( "7" ) moa, or just over 2/3 down the vertical thin section of the reticle.

If you prefer to sight in for 300 yards, you do the same approach . Your 30-06 will be about 4"+ " high at 100 and 200 yards (so you hold under ~ 1 - 2 moa), or in reality, just hold in middle of the lung area to 300 yards. A 400 yard shot will be shot 3 moa low (12" ) , cross hair on the top of the back. A 500 yard shot? Get closer.I

30-06 trajectory with 300 yard zero

The Burris ballistic plex set up is a fine scope/reticle option , just saying you CAN do your own holdover with another system ( same thing, just different).

A 300 yard zero takes a lot of guesswork out of a shot to 350 yards, pretty much +/- 5 inches, or "point blank range", as you hold in the midd!e of the lung area to 350 yards, and have a dead mule deer.
This means your current standard cross hair reticle will be more than adequate . You don't need a rangefinder with a 300 yard zero out to 350 yards. The "K.I.S.S."" method usually works best.

DO NOT forget to input wind drift. It is as important than range hold over. Know "full value" (90' crosswind) and half value" (quartering direction) values.

Good luck.

You bet! I've used them on a 30-06, 30-06 Improved, 35 Whelen Imp, 338WM and 7mm RUM. Not too busy, and they have always held zero.

Are you fellas using a ffp or a sfp scope with this reticle?

Mine is the Fullfield II Ballistic Plex 3x9. The other one, Timberline 4.5x14 also has the Ballistic Plex reticle.

Any BDC reticle can be used with most cartridges with a little experimentation.

KISS method

Zero for 300 yards.

Your current standard cross hair scope will be more than adequate. You'll be about +/- 5 inches to 350 yards for 165-180 grain spitzer from a 30-06. Hold on the middle of the chest to 350 yards. "Point blank" range. Dead mule deer.

You'll be 12" low at 400 yards. Hold on the top of the back. . Dead mule deer.

No matter what reticle you use, you need to know the distance. If you limit your shot to 350 yards, with a 300 yard zero, there is no need for the rangefinder.

Your current scope is fine. Just practice out to 350 yards, and also factor in/practice wind drift for a full skill set.

KISS works.

^^^ This! You can ever get data for other magnification settings, such as 6 or 7x if you prefer.

The Veracity is nice but not sure how much weight you are looking to add. The Burris FF2 is only around 13oz but the Veracity is double that around 25-26oz.

I don’t know if the OP knows the difference between first and second focal plane and how it affects BDC.
While I have used bdc with success, having a CDS dial gives me much more confidence.
One of my tract scopes has Their BDC and it’s very clear and easy to use and their program is also very good.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
