I remember a John Ferguson from the early 60s - pre helmets.
He probably wasn't the 'dirtiest' but was one of the toughest
and fighting-est.

Lester Hayes who used copious amounts of stickum. Fred Biletnikoff used the stuff too. Not saying they tried to injure anyone, but they did carry a lot of the turf with them.

There were a lot of guys who would punish you, but did it legally. At least legally by the rules back when they played. Lott, Hendricks, Harrison, Butkus Joe Greene, etc. But even in his day Conrad Dobler played dirty. Early in his career Suh was right there with Dobler. You don't see as much out of Suh lately.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.
