I have seen various threads on certain prefixes, is there one more desirable prefix? Reason I ask, I ended up with a 700 243 with a RR prefix, while trying to decipher which X-Mark trigger it had, I ran across the prefix threads.

Thanks for any insight!

I have six Remington 700's. One has no prefix, followed by an A, B, E, G and RR and they're all equally as good. Although, in saying that, if I had to pick just one prefix it would be either A or B simply because I like the high gloss blued finish of that era.

I prefer the ones without letters...

The RR are pretty straight and usually don’t require much truing. The main problem is most have Zero primary extraction.

And aesthetics suck donkey balls with the big ass scanning codes on the side of the action.....

No expert but the stainless models seem to be more consistent but I may just have been lucky.

I think I remember some folks saying the "C" prefix actions where supposed to be a bit smoother overall than some others. My KS Mtn rifle is a "C" prefix action and its always been slick and been a nice action/rifle.

4,5,early 6 digit receivers do not have anti bind rails so choose the correct follower or the RH bolt lug will hit the fwd bottom corner of the ejection port upon cycling the action.

Late 6 digit & 7 digit receivers were the start of anti band rails.


"G & S" receivers of 2006 with the introduction of the X Mark trigger groups have the anomalies in the bolt handle cut.

RR prefix along with the above listed have the "short cam" latest design bolt handles & have at best .020" primary extraction.

Any Remington bolt handle depending on vintage is either .080" to .180" out of TIME for primary extraction.

Had Shooter71 rework one of the new RR stainless steel short actions for me. Hawk Hill barrel, in an unbedded Mcmillan. Shoots 135 bergers, 140 vld and 147 eld like this. Good enough.

But I guess the earlier, the better. Some non prefix actions did not have the lug guide. I had one without that and thought it was okay. Never had a problem with it.

That stupid QR code or whatever they stamp on them is less obvious with cerakote. Or rattle can it.

60’s and 70’s the actions Rc harder. Naturally the tolerances were high. Remington re tooled for stainless action maybe 10 years ago. A lot of those actions came out very nice with the new tooling

how do I tell if a non prefix action has a lug guide?

Look at the lug with the bolt out. If it has the narrow channel guide milled through it, it has the guide. If the lug is solid, it doesn't have the guide and just slides along the top of the action rail.

This is the lug guide. May be a more technical term?? LOL.

The RR code receivers are CNC machined and are the better receiver. The primary extraction problem is the bolt handles are out of timing and the handles are too far from the rear of the rear receiver ring to provide good primary extraction. It is cheaper to have Dans40X to reposition and tig weld the handle than to use one of the older receivers and pay to have them "squared".
Ugly can be fixed in a cheap way.
