I have a Kimber Montana 270WSM and a Remington 700 CDL SF in 7 rem mag with a 26" spout. Target species are Mule Deer and Elk. The Kimber is submoa at 100 yards, I have not shot the Remington yet. I would have to buy a lighter stock and do some mods to the remington and nothing to the Kimber. Yet I feel that in a longer range situation max of 400 yards the 700 would be less finnicky.(I have never owned a 700 that did not shoot) . Thoughts ?

I'd probably keep the known quantity, sell the Rem, buy a bunch of ammo and/or components, and spend some time shooting out to 400, then call it a day.

Just keep the one you like. Out to 400 yards either will do everything you want. At that range I would be perfectly content to use my 270Win.

If you like the Kimber- just keep it if it is working.

For sake of picking nits :

If you reload it doesn't matter much. If not, may be harder to find ammo for the short mag. So point - Remington.

For me a 26" tube would not be endearing so point - Kimber.

Short action chambering - another point - Kimber

Not enough diff on the receiving end at 400 yds to sway either way.

Sell the Remington, stock up on WSM ammo, go forth and hunt....

Can't imagine I'd ever enjoy lugging around a long, heavy magnum rifle with a 26" barrel for hunting. I'd have that thing snagged on everything in sight.

I like a 26" barrel on a magnum. Buy I'd have a tough time picking which one of those two need cut from the team.

Nope I love 26" barrelled magnums and it is far from heavy.

I wanted to add I said "Kimber" not based on any particular dislike of the Remington - rifle, caliber or barrel. Rather, it sounds like you've shot the Kimber enough to have confidence in it. There's some value in a rifle that has proven itself. I'm pretty loathe to move along a rifle that has been accurate and reliable after plenty of shooting time. Also, you've indicated the Kimber not only shoots well but is configured how you want it.

On one hand you have a known quantity configured how you like. On the other hand an unknown quantity that needs some more work.

If you need to move one now, then the Remington is the easy choice to move along.

If you're just thinking about maybe making some space in the safe, then I'd say do this: go shoot the Kimber at 400 yards. See if it's finicky. If it shoots how you want at 400, the only reason to keep the Remington around is if you want to. Then, before I'd sell the Kimber I'd shoot the Remington out to 400 to make certain I preferred it to the Kimber.

Yep ! I have both 26 and 24 s. In my hunting I don't notice any difference.




Since I have both 24 & 26 and hunt both -- I can't imagine 2" more being a problem.
Now IF you're truck hunting, the longer bll 'could' be unhandy.


On the other issue - I'd pick 7mm RM because of more bullet choices.
I have 270s and 7 mms and I have NOTHING against 270s but in a mag---- I'd pick 7 RM.

That part in bold makes no sense to me. That said, if you want the 700, go for it. I wouldn't futz around with "success", and apparently neither would most of the folks that replied, but everyone needs to go a little crazy sometimes.

Or keep the Kimber and marry a stripper.

Heavier gun is more stable , easier to shoot.

True, but a well-balanced lightweight does fine too, and what a difference on the way up the hill!

Got a couple of light ones now, better balanced than a couple I had long ago, and steadiness isn't an issue. But by all means do what you like.

At least there's no rush. Shoot that 700, maybe you'll find out something that'll help you make up your mind.

My short mag is a shooter too. I sure wouldn’t sell mine off. Keep the Kimber.
