Just heard on the evening news that the Michigan DNRE and Feds are considering a limited quota Moose hunt on the island. The population is pushing 2K and reaching critical mass due to wolves dying off. Most intelligent thing I’ve heard out of those folks in years. It would make for a great hunt.

Now that would make some sense. I can see that island from the road I live on and as our NE Mn moose keep dying off it's weird to think there , 17 miles away is an island over run wit them.

Moose management on Isle Royale (HR 154)
House Resolution 154 had a hearing last week in the House Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Committee. MUCC testified in support of this legislative resolution in accordance with a member-passed MUCC resolution. MUCC submitted comments during the National Park System's initial public comment period in support of utilizing hunters to manage the Isle Royal moose population.

Good, keep the wolves outta there, issue permits, let man manage the population, state makes $$.... Pretty simple.

There you go, thinking that anything with political connection could be simple.
I think the wolves and moose both s/b managed with limited hunts. The "experiment" was cool for decades, but now it has run its course.

its hard to believe common sense happens or rules and even make a few bucks for the state ? but it would be a great thing to allow hunters to reduce the moose population, instead of bringing in wolves for a foolish expensive option .

I was in the U P hare hunting few years ago. Farmers will tell you if you see a wolf your only gonna see it once right? Shame the wolf season only lasted a year.

Probably inbreeding and parasites. Exactly. The wolf population has been inbred for decades. They tried to introduce some from the mainland and they haven’t taken hold. Some fell into old mine shafts ( not modern mine shafts, ancient ones). There are only two of the original pack left and very few of the introduced ones. They won’t mingle either. The original two stay to one side of the island and the others stay on the other side. I guess some have even left the island across the ice. Too bad some of the moose don’t make their way back to the mainland. I hear that there have always been a few that have crossed back and forth from the island to the Keweenaw Peninsula. My grandfather had seen them before back in the 40’s and 50’s while deer hunting.
