Just what is (was) the purpose of a saddle ring? (just another of life's questions I don't know the answer to... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />)

I'm guessing that the ring held the gun in the scabbard somehow as you were moseying along the trail! I think only the 1899F's were the only ones they put out with them. I found out they are a pain in the butt to try to find! I just bought one from a buddy a few hours away and didn't see it until it arrived last week. Rick pointed out to me it was an F and the two small holes in the side (I thought was bubba'd by some idiot for a side mounted scope turned out to be the holes for the saddle ring! So I got lucky, it will have a reproduced saddle ring till I can locate an original.

Found a place a buddy recommended that has them called Western Gun Parts. www.westerngunparts.comLike he told me, it's better to call him directly, they much rather talking cause they don't like hanging around the computer all day. (708) 489-5711 Edmonton, Alberta By the way they're $30 Can. so around $23 U.S. for saddle ring and the staple.

Thanks Mad Dog. You never know when you might need one of those. A lot of the rings were removed over the years. I'm not sure how hard it will be to connect the staple to the receiver. I think the back side was peened and the front was not...not sure. May be we can get some in put on this from others?
Keep us posted as to how it works out when you get the part. I would like measurements on the ring and staple, please. There wsa a lot of variation in the originals.

Well I ordered it this morning, I was fiddling around with the rifle and it looks like the bolt is gonna have to come out to pinch the back of the staples together. The staple holes are 3/4" wide from center to center. I'll be sure to give you some other measurements when the ring gets here. They said it would be in the mail today so I should be recieving it by the middle of next week, hopefully.

The "Saddle Ring" is just what it sez....You use a leather thong loop and hang the gun on your saddle horn in the event you do not have a saddle scabbard or are inclined to shoot from your horses back and want quick access to the rifle....

Hey rick, it came in the mail today and fits like a glove! It was definately a repro for the 1899 as the tip of one is longer than the other so it will fit where the reciever drops down to the stock. The measurement is 1 1/8" across the outside of the ring and the staple is 3/8" for center to center. I'll send you some pics on your email address. Now all I gotta do is take it to my gunsmith to peen the backs of it in for me. If anyone else is missing a saddle ring for there 1899f I'd highly recommend this repro.
