My old job.....they laid 600 off in one swoop.
i was just a tech, did repair and other under micriscope.
A gift/ talent...... not learned
Former boss called a couple months later asking me to come back and work contract for half the pay. Needs me to bail a project out.
Nope.
Former customer ( good dude ) asked ne last yr to work for him at the old place.
Salaried. Mgmnt could cut me at any time. Not gonna happen twice.
Was considered best in a large corp. No, from other discussions, pretty sure I was not replaced.
They simply did without.
My whole old dept is gone. The 5 million dollar lab (80's pricing ) is a storage room
Now my job ( diff company )......is crap. Easily replaced. Just a number. Zero job satiafaction.
But decent pay and insurance.
And if they shut down or lay off they gotta pay me more to be gone

I can retire at any time, every year of service gives me 225.00 more a month on my pension, trying to make a couple of more years. I like working and drawing my Social Security. It shows up like magic the second Wednesday of the month. I’ve already trained my replacement. I don’t have to do equipment operating much anymore. They are gonna have to find another plumber that can weld or hire it out. I don’t give a cshit.

Anyone can be replaced. When my wife retired (third time....) within weeks she was replaced. By three people. Either she got better at her job, or more stupid, or the up-comers aren't that good. The first two times she retired it only took 2 people to do the work she had been doing. Good thing she was so busy all those decades maybe. Too busy to replace me!

I don’t think they will replace plumber-pipefitters with machines, but they have made materials that are less labor intensive.

I was asked to train my employer's younger brother and did a good job of it. I was let go, so the brother could take my job. I called up all the old clients I wanted to do business with and stole about 65% of my prior employer's business. They screamed like wounded eagles!

I get replaced frequently.
My primary duty is in a production support fab shop for a large primary metals producer. I make stuff for the furnaces and equipment used to make metal.
There is frequently need for repair welders in the production plant, and I am usually sent. The company position on manning jobs states that any competent millwright in the facility can do any and all jobs at the facility. So when I'm out doing repair welding they usually stick some other guy in the fab shop.
And occasionally I return to the fab shop to find that my replacement did creditable work.
But I aint skeered for my job yet...
