I know it’s crazy but I have a couple thousand rounds of 22 mag and no rifle. Guess I should have thought of that prior to selling my Henry....

What under $400 bolt 22 mag would you buy?

Currently I am thinking about the Ruger American Go Wild version for $399 or a XT22M Marlin for $229

Why did you sell the Henry? I'm looking at the Henry pump and Ruger American.

My Marlin XT 22 Mag is a shooter, great buy, I've got the tubular magazine model which I really like.

My RAR has extraction issues, so do four other RARs I have personal knowledge of.

I think I'd go with the Marlin, preferably the one with the tube magazine.

Savages usually shoot well, but have cheap-azz magazines that are really off-putting, to me at least.

The Marlin with box magazines are good, but require constant "adjustment" to keep feeding smoothly (at least my .17HMR does).

That brings us back to the tube-fed Marlin, doesn't it?

Daveh: I would absolutely opt for the Ruger American Varmint in 22 Magnum!
I have three of these (none in 22 Magnum - two are 22 L.R.'s and one is in 17HMR).
I have NO extraction problems what so ever with any of my three "RAR's".
Accuracy, fit, finish, function, looks and the world famous Ruger rotary magazine make this a top choice for me and I have recommended these to many folks who are also happy with theirs.

For under $400, I'd look for a used Marlin 783/883/983 S, the laminated, stainless, tubular magazine style.

I currently have quite a few rifles chambered in .22 Magnum and if forced to sell all but one, I'd keep the 883S and never look back.

That said, my favorite .22 Magnum is probably a Savage 24 combination gun in .22M over .410. A light, handy, woods loafing rifle and shotgun in one package.

I'd love to find one of those!!

I bought a used older marlin bolt action tube feed with a cheap scope for $150. Its a good shooter and accurate. Easy to get a good trigger on them to.

Just found Rossi has new one and it's got good reviews. Model RB22M for $153 at Buds.

This, 883S and install the RifleBasix trigger. Done!

buy the Ruger American rifle ,i own a half dozen 22 mag. rifles and i like the Ruger American the best.

Have several 22mags, including 3 Marlins...1 tube fed & 2 mag fed.

Pretty decent accuracy on them for the price, and as mentioned, easy to make the trigger better with a simple spring swap & a bit of polishing.

I found the marlin 4 shot mags seem to feed considerably better than the 7 shot mags, and the short ones are almost flush fitting making for easier carry. For the price, i think the Marlins are a pretty good buy.

That being said, i bought a 2nd CZ455 in 22mag 2 weeks ago new for only $300...cheapest one i saw on gunbroker today was about $360, so that might be an option for you also.

One outfit has a SS heavy barrel Marlin XT for $265 so may look at it.

I got the RAR compact, I like it.

i forgot to mention this the Ruger American has the better clip/magazine system

I have an 882 SSV, an older heavy barrel stainless .22 Mag and like it better after I swapped the barreled action into a laminated stock from a 917V. The Marlin bolt guns in 17 HMR and .22 MAG come with 2 magazines, a 4-shot that fits almost flush with the bottom of the stock and a 7-shot that protrudes well below the bottom of the stock and makes it awkward to carry in one hand for me.

I have 5 Marlins in .22 MAG, 4 clip fed and 1 tubular. I prefer the tubular 883S, but the clip fed rifles are as accurate as the shooter and ammunition allow them to be. I'm probably a little bias toward the 883S because my friend who is a subsistence hunter/fisher/farmer uses one as his daily carry, do everything, rifle for everything that it is legal for.

I would agree that the Ruger magazines are better than most other rimfire magazines, but the biggest Achilles Heel of an .22 Mag is finding a brand and bullet weight/style that shoots the best group. It isn't as if you can buy a box of Eley and know that it will be an accurate option in nearly every rifle.

I wouldn't give a wooden nickel for a Ruger American. I had two of them and they were both junk. Unreliable, poorly balanced, plastic piece of shyt. None of the even dozen .22 mags I've owned from Ruger, Winchester, Henry, Mossberg, Savage or Ithaca were as accurate and trouble free as my old Marlin 882. Never a bobble with that rifle in 30 years and thousands of rounds and it's a solid MOA shooter with it's favored loads.

A couple years ago I decided I wanted one of the older Marlin bolt action 22 magnums. They used to be a dime a dozen, but not anymore. I eventually did find one.
