32 Rimfire single shot
25/20
32/20
22 Long Rifle
The back porch was full of dried Hawk and Eagle claws(early 60's). And there would have been a lot more rabbits and quail around in those days too. We see tons of hawks around here and never a day goes by I don't see an eagle. Rarely see cottontails around here any more. Gotta protect those white headed buzzards though!! I am glad they didn't make the turkey our national bird though, I like eating them too much!!

What year was the .22-250 legitimized by Remington and how many years before that was it a wildcat?

I believe it was first developed as the Varminter in the mid 1930's.. It may have been even earlier.. I believe it came into production in the mid 1960's.. I had one made just before it was standarized by Remington.. Haven't been without one since..

My Grandpa told me he wasn't allowed to practice, shot a 22 mostly. He'd check his trap line on the way to school and put his gun in the corner of the school house. Then he'd hunt his way home for something to eat before chores. Said he shot a lot of partridge, squirrels and rabbit. Killed his first buck with a 303 British, and in 1911 he trapped a wolf that he killed with a 22 and it brought $50 bounty. He bought a Winchester 94 in 32 special for $14 used and gave the rest of the wolf money to his mom. I have the 32 special and still hunt with it every year.

Harvey Donaldson's book, "Your's Truly", has stories about HD hunting 'chucks near his home in Little Falls, NY, back then. HD was well acquainted with Lysle Kilbourn and M.S. Risley, two other gun looneys, who designed and improved cartridges. HD was a Steven falling block fan and seemed to prefer rimmed cartridges for his wildcatting builds. HD claimed to have designed the original 22-250, using a 0.228" barrel blank that he got from someone at Savage.
One hundred years ago the northeast was a lot more open, small farm fields and cattle pastures that have grown up into wood lots than it has been for the past 50 years or so.

250-3000 was invented in 1915 by Charles Newton. I'm sure it was used on varmints, but originally only came in the Savage 99.

One of my uncles had a Winchester 70 Featherweight 243 and in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, my cousins and brothers and I would go riding around with him and watch him shoot hawks.

I have a 1946 Am. Rifleman that talks about varmint calibers, especially coyote rifles.. The guy with the info. Mentions having a .22-15-45 as one of his first rifles.. Mostly used on gophers, jacks, etc. His next rifles were Marlin 25-20's.. From there he moved to Marlin 25-36's and he mentions buying a 5x Malcom scope.. He also began using a 22 Niedner.. A .32-40 case necked down to .22.. It used a 60 gr. base band bullet made from .22 short cases.. He also mentions shooting out several Marlin lever action .22's.. I suppose on gophers and such.. He said in 1912, he bought a Savage .22 Hi-Power.. He sent it back and had a solid frame and a heavier .22" barrel to replace the take down model he first bought.. The Niedner and the Savage got a lot of use on coyotes, and he had scopes on both.. He briefly tried a .22 Newton.. A .30-40 Krag case necked to .22.. In 1935 he bought one of the first .220 Swifts.. In 15 years, it will be 100 years old.. Very interesting article from times long gone. Hunting coyotes in below zero weather from horseback made for some tough customers.. Some years he shot upwards of 60+ coyotes.. It seems he was employed as a coyote hunter.. He also shot a number of Lobo wolves.. He mentions killing those with the Savage.. Elmer Keith wrote of hunting coyotes for their pelts and using a .44-77, the old .30-06, and in 1925 a .300 Hoffman magnum... I remember in the late 40's chasing yotes a horse back ( not me) Dad & neighbor farmers.
